Punjab to distribute utensils worth Rs 100 crore before polls

Chandigarh, Aug 29 (IANS): With assembly elections less than six months away, the Punjab government has decided to distribute utensils worth Rs 100 crore.

Rural Development and Panchayat Minister Sikandar Singh Maluka said on Monday that the utensils would be distributed to Panchayats (village councils), Mahila Mandals (women forums) and Youth Clubs.

The state's Rural Development and Panchayats department has initiated the process for the procurement of utensils.

Tendering process for the procurement of utensils was complete, the minister said.

"The process of the procurement of utensils is at an advanced stage and the government will distribute them before the imposition of the election code," Maluka said.

Assembly elections in the state are likely in February next year.

The ruling Shiromani Akali Dal-BJP alliance government, which has been in power since 2007, is trying to retain power.
