Pulses price down due to government efforts: Naidu

New Delhi, Aug 31 (IANS): Thanks to the government's efforts, the prices of major pulses have come down, Union Minister for Urban Development M. Venkaiah Naidu said on Wednesday.

"Thanks to the initiatives of the Prime Minister, the prices of major pulses have come down," Naidu tweeted.

"We have also put imposition of stock limits to prevent hoarding; it must have cooling effect on price and bring relief to consumers," Naidu said.

He said over 1.33 lakh tonnes of pulses were seized during raids last year and were "released in the market at a cheaper rate".

The increased availability of imported pulses and the "estimate of a bumper harvest" will further bring down the prices, Naidu said.

According to the minister, the sown area for pulses has increased from 95.40 lakh hectares in 2014-15 to 139.42 lakh hectares in 2016-17.
