Assamese poet and critic Nalinidhar Bhattacharya dies


Guwahati, Sep 2 (IANS): One of Assam's most prominent and celebrated poet and literary critic Nalinidhar Bhattacharya passed away at a private hospital in Guwahati on Friday.

His family said that Bhattacharya died around 4.10 a.m. on Friday. He was 95 and was admitted in the hospital on Wednesday. He was suffering from age-related ailments.

Bhattacharya had received Sahitya Akademi award in 2002, authored five anthologies and several articles and critiques in his literary career.

A teacher of Assamese literature, Bhattacharya taught in St. Anthony's College in Shillong and later at the Arya Vidyapeeth College in Guwahati before retiring in 1983.

Some of his best-known works include Serasalir Malita, Noni Asone Bharat, Aahot Sapon, Mohot Aitijhya etc.

President of Asom Sahitya Sabha Dhrubajyoti Bora has expressed his sorrow over Bhattacharya's death and said that the state has lost a great soul and a humanist.
