Over 2,000 Agra jail inmates continue hunger strike

Agra, Sep 2 (IANS): Over 2,000 inmates of Agra Central Jail continued their hunger strike for the sixth consecutive day on Friday.

They are demanding the immediate release of inmates who have completed 14 years of sentence.

Half a dozen of the hunger strikers have fallen ill and have been transferred to the district hospital.

When senior officials met them on Thursday, the agitating inmates demanded that Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav should visit them.

Senior superintendent of police S.H.M.Rizvi said their demands were referred to the state government and a decision was likely soon.

Meanwhile, a few inmates complained that they were being harassed and pressurised to end the strike.

But they were firmly committed to the action and would not end their strike till their demands were met, they said.
