Soaring temperatures in Spain break September records

Madrid, Sep 7 (IANS): High temperatures on Wednesday were expected to continue across many parts of Spain, with "orange alerts" effective in 14 provinces.

The temperature in capital Madrid was expected to reach up to 41 degrees Celsius, with similar predictions for Badajoz, Cordoba, Toledo and Ourense, according to the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET).

Much of the peninsula remained under "high alert" for forest fires, a status expected to ease on Thursday, EFE news reported.

September got off to an unusually hot start with Spain seeing the highest temperatures recorded in the past 30 years, AEMET said on Tuesday.

Coastal areas along the east and south of the country were not at risk due to heat.
