JNU Ph.D. scholar arrested on rape charge

New Delhi, Sep 14 (IANS): A Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) doctoral research scholar was arrested here for allegedly raping a 26-year-old woman on the pretext of marriage, police sources said on Wednesday.

Ajay Singh, a resident of Madhya Pradesh pursuing Ph.D. at the JNU, was arrested on Wednesday after the victim recorded her statement following a rape case against him at south Delhi's Vasant Kunj police station, a source told IANS.

A case was registered against Singh on Tuesday evening, a senior police official told IANS on the condition of anonymity.

According to the police, the woman had accused Singh, who was known to the victim since 2008, of raping her.

"The girl had come to Delhi in 2010 and they were in relationship since then. Despite repeated requests from the victim, Singh was not marrying her, hence she approached the police," the police officer said.

The case was registered under Section 376 (rape) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

Last month, an activist of the All India Student Association (AISA) and a doctoral research scholar of the university, Anmol Ratan, was booked on the charge of rape.

Ratan had allegedly raped a girl after luring her to his hostel room on the pretext of giving her the copy of a movie she asked for.
