Mangalore, Dec 15: The presidential speech of prof L S Sheshagiri Rao at the 74th All India Kannada Sahitya Sammelan (ABKSS) held in Udupi came in for a lot of criticism especially from the leftist organizations including Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI). They condemned Raofor disregarding the genuine concerns of the people by and large.
In a press release issued here, the organizations such as Samudaya, Mangalore, Pragathipara Chinthakara Vedike, Bharathapara Janavedike, Bharatha Vidyarthi Federation, Manavatha Vedike and Janavadi Mahila Sangha in a combined manner all charged Sheshagiri Rao for utterly failing to focus in his speech on the real problems faced by a common man in his day to day life. It also charged him with keeping literature away from the lives of the common man.
Some of their complaints enumerated in the press release were as follows:
1. Important issues which ail people like communalism, fundamentalism and casteism not touched by Sheshagiri in his speech, therefore requiring all round condemnation.
2. Did not touch on the key issue of untouchability, a malaise suffered by Dalits and other backward caste people.
3. The naxal menace not touched upon in the speech, which divert the direction of youth in the region leading them astray.
4. Did not cover major issues such as privatisation, liberalisation and globalization which would destroy the land, water and the life of the people.
Further, the press release alleges that since the president Sheshagiri hailed from the 'Sangh Parivar' bastion and so has delivered a lecture suiting the idealogy of his faith. Moreover, the release also questioned the credibility and intention of the organizers who organized the Souhardha Sahitya Sammelana recently, who the press release declared were trying to retaliate the communality of the majority with the help of the minority.
