Goa: MP Shantaram L Naik Nominated President of All India Konkani Parishad

Goa, Dec 18: Rajya Sabha MP Shantaram L Naik is unanimously nominated as president of the 26th session of the All India Konkani Parishad (AIKP) to be held at Town Hall, Ernakulam on 1st,2nd and 3rd  Feb 2007. The decision was taken by the executive body of AIKP held at Daulat building, Panjim on Dec 16, informed its vice president John D'Silva on Monday, Dec 16 2007.

Shantaram L Naik is a Rajya Sabha member from Goa elected on July 14,  2005. He was also a Lok Sabha MP and Goa pradesh congress committe president. He is a native of Cuncolim and now a resident of Margao. Naik was born on  April 12, 1946 at Concolim Goa. He is a lawyer and an agriculturist by profession. His parents are Laxman and Sita Naik Desai.

He married Beena on May 11, 1984 and they have one son. He resides near Swami Math at Gogol in Margao, Goa. Watching movies and listening to light music are his hobbies. He has been a congress party social worker helping the needy and weaker sections of society for the last 35 years. As a freelance writer he contributes articles to local newspapers in Goa. He has published a book on 'Law of Town and Country Planning in Goa' (a compilation), in the year 1994.

Naik started dabbling in political activity as a student in 1967 by putting up Congress election campaign posters in public places. He became actively involved in politics from 1972. He started his law practice in the same year. He won the 1-Panaji (North Goa) Parliamentary Constituency election in 1984 by a vast margin.

As a Member of Parliament (MP), he introduced the highest number of private members' bills in the eighth Lok Sabha. He was elected as president of Goa Pradesh Congress Committee (G.P.C.C.). He was also chairman of Goa, Daman and Diu Industrial Development Corporation (GDDIDC), president of South Goa Advocates' Association (SGAA) and vice-president of All Goa Advocates Association (AGAA).

While being a secretary SGAA, he played an active role in the creation of a separate judicial district for south Goa. He was spokesperson of G.P.C.C. in the by-elections to the five assembly constituencies held in Goa in 2005.
