Mangalore: Varsity to Institute 4 More Gold Medals

Mangalore, Dec 19: The Academic Council of the Varsity has decided to institute gold medals for the first rank holders in three post graduation courses and one BCom course, from the coming scholastic year.  The decision was taken at a meeting of the council held on Tuesday December 18.

It was also announced that the gold medals will be given in four different names.  The first is Girisham gold medal which will be given to the student who scores highest marks in PG Economics. This medal is instituted by Prof S G Giriappa and his research student Dr Shameeena.

The second medal is named after ‘the late Dr P Gururaj Bhat’ which will be given for the first rank holder in PG in history.  The said award has been instituted by P Parameshwar Bhat in the name of his father the late Dr P Gururaj Bhat, a known a historian. The third medal is named after ‘Shrimathi Lakshmi and it will be given to the first rank holder in M Com. G Shankar Family trust Udupi has instituted this medal. Shrimathi Rukmini Shetty memorial medal will be given to the first rank holders in BCom. This medal is instituted by B Sudhakar Shetty , Mumbai.

Speaking to media Varsity vice-chancellor Prof K M Kaveriappa said that the donors have constituted an endowment trust by paying Rs 50,000 each to institute these medals. He also said that many PG courses do not have gold medals but Shankar family trust has agreed to institute two more medals. He further added that twenty years ago few of the medals were instituted and the deposit was Rs 10,000 to Rs 30,000.

Registrar Dr K Sundar Naik was present on this occasion.
