Mangalore, Dec 20: A family belonging to the minority community on the occasion of their festival slaughtered a cow, which raised the hackles of some of the majority community members residing in the surrounding area at Marnamikatte near Cascia high school, here in the city on Thursday Dec. 20. It must be noted here that the cow is considered a symbol of worship by the said majority community.
When the incident of the cow sacrifice, done illegally without the requisite official permission, reached the ears of the majority community, they all gathered together and lodged a ’sarvajanik’ (public) complaint as an affront on their sensibilities to the city police. This group comprised of the Shri Rama Sena, Bajrang Dal amongst others. Seeing this gathering the minority community too on its part formed its own group on the other side, to protect its own interests. With this a tense situation started slowly developing, with both sides bracing for a fight and chance of an open confrontation brewing in the place.
Considering the tense situation in the region the district police have decided not to take any chances and therefore have taken precautionary measures, especially in view of the festivities of Eid ul-Adha celebrated by the minority community. They have cordoned off the area, and the police team comprising the District Reserve Police, Superintendent of Police, DySP have all combined together to drive the agitators away from the sensitive area where the cow sacrifice had taken place earlier in the day. Four persons belonging to the said minority family who sacrificed the cow have been arrested and the carcass of the dead cow has been confiscated by the police.
The situation in the area is tense, but under control, according to police sources. Moreover they opine that all arrangements have been taken to ensure peace in the region.
