Mangalore: Two-pronged Strategy Suggested for Combating Kole Roga

Mangalore, Dec 23: A two-pronged strategy has been suggested by the Horticulure Department to the union government for combating the unbridled “Kole Roga”. Informing this to the presspersons here on Friday, December 21, P Ganeshan, secretary, Horticulture department said that the disease has been affecting arecanut plantations, especially in Malnad and other coastal regions of Karnataka.

He further said that the strategy has to be implemented for over three years. It includes integrated pest and nutrition management, he added.

In Shimoga district, the disease has affected nearly 82,000 hectares out of 1.67 lac hectares of arecanut plantations, he added.

The department has also informed Sharad Pawar, minister for Agriculture, to follow-up the visit of the Central team to the affected areas. Therefore the horticulture team has forwarded Rs 42 crore proposal to the Centre, P Ganeshan stated.
