Fire guts one of Kolkata's oldest single-screen movie theatre

Kolkata, Oct 2 (IANS): A major blaze gutted one of the oldest single-screen movie theatres here, the Jyoti Cinema, on Sunday, a fire department official said.

The cinema located in central Kolkata's Esplanade area was founded in the mid-1930s and was shut down in 2008.

"A fire broke out 2.10 a.m. and destroyed the entire hall. As many as 26 fire tenders were pressed into service," the official said.

The blaze was brought under control at around 4.35 a.m.

However, no casualties were reported.

The theatre gained popularity by screening 70mm films in the 1970s. It showcased a steady mix of both Hollywood and Hindi movies.
