New Delhi, Oct 3 (HT) : The Supreme Court awarded 25 years imprisonment on Monday to two men convicted for killing Delhi resident Nitish Katara in 2002, bringing an end to a case that shook the country.
Vikas Yadav – the son of powerful Uttar Pradesh politician DP Yadav -- and his cousin Vishal killed Katara as they didn’t approve of the victim’s affair with their sister Bharti because of a caste difference. Vikas and Vishal will both spend 25 years in jail.
The high court had awarded the duo 30 years in prison but the SC reduced the quantum of the sentence. Their aide, Sukhdev Pehelwan, was awarded 20 years imprisonment.
In 2014, the high court had convicted the three men, terming the offence as “honour killing” stemming from a “deeply-entrenched belief” in the caste system.
