Mangaluru, Oct 6: “The rules for the higher education are framed in 2000 and much has happened in the world after that and to make out students competent with the changing trends we need to make changes in the policies of universities in the state. We must frame a system to revise the policies once in every month,” said Ivan D’souza, the chief whip of Karnataka Legislative Assembly.

He was referring to university act of 2000 while addressing the gathered in the Ravindra Kala Bhavan of the University College after inaugurating the new courses in the evening college including MA in Konkani on Wednesday, October 5.

French and German diploma courses too were started. MA in Konkani is first in the state and second in India.

“We always speak about upgrading our education system but unfortunately we have not updated the university act. Now due to the semester system, our students have to write exams once in six months and hence are not able to perform in extracurricular activities like sports.” he added.

“Earlier when there was the annual system of evaluation, students could focus on sports. Now the circular to give additional grace marks to the athletes and sportsmen by the university is appreciable and I urge the government to extend the same to even the other universities of the state. We have started many universities and made many experiments with them. Now it's the time to study all our rules and reframe them as per the existing challenges.” Ivan said.

“We have many courses to offer in the state but unfortunately if a person fails to get the engineering seat, he opts for a diploma seat or the ITI seat. The students must study by choice and merit and not be chance. Hence I will urge the government to start selection of students for all the courses at once and avoid the confusion.” Ivan concluded.

Speaking on the occasion, the president of the Karnataka Konkani Sahitya Academy Roy Castelino said that the MLC must urge the government to introduce Konkani in the pre-university stage across the state so that the discontinuity while learning Konkan between the high school and the graduation level is filled.

He later also handed the cart of few books symbolically to the principal of the university college donated by the academy to the college.

Principal of the evening college, Dr Subhashini Shrivathsa, registrar of Mangaluru University Prof KM Lokesh, principal of the university college Prof Uday Kumar and others were present on the occasion.

Really .. it is laudable to have the language as subject.. but complete syllabus...that is stretching too fat. My question is...will the people who came up with this idea be responsible to provide adequate jobs for the students at the end of their studies.. it us great to come up with these ideas..but there is a future to think of... the graduates cannot dream if moving out of Mangalore..even in Mangalore..they cannot expect a decent paying job. .as we are looking at multinational companies that have infiltrated in our system... please give the readers the jobs these students will be offered....

Every language in India is rich in heritage.. with over 1000 years for most of the language, there is so much literature to study.. it is good to see that Konkani is getting recognized.. much appreciated.

lets celebrate every language.. yes, don't show your abuse or ignorance if tomorrow sankrit is also given prominence.. if the amount of literature is considered, I don't think any language in the world can come close to Sanskrit.

Not everything can be looked from commercial angle.. what will you do after MA on this language.. people can pursue it if they like to...

    Peddu,

Konglish is a talent Konkani-speakers alone have. Can a Tulu/Kannada speaker speak in Konkani as fluent as a konmaki-speaker speaks Tulu/Kannada ? Never !

So, they need to be given credit for their Konglish too...

    @ Lydia Lobo,
I feel Konglish developed more thru shying away from speaking his/her mother tongue and comings generations need to undo it.

    Mr. Tauro,

The practice is maximum with Konkani speakers settled outside the city. However, the process of undoing Koglish is already in place, by its own. Its due to disadvantages Konglish children face in socialising. May it be a marriage or a Konkani gathering, they feel the backlash for their oratory inability. They understand how they are less preferred in alliance seeking.

The practice of Konglish was started by parents of a couple of decades back. But when they found their children's humiliating experience and introvert behaviour when exposed to their cousins back home, present parents have automatically mended the practice.

This is my self experience, not a generalised one.

How will MA in Konkani help students? Say a group of 50 joins and graduates in 2 years of time. What does the future holds for them ???

We need courses that earn income to our future generation. An income that further generates taxes to the government. If, out of 50, 2 or 3 (may be) appointed as lecturers, a couple would join publications, what about remaining 45 ? Just imagine - would we welcome proposal from a MA (Konkani) boy/girl ?

Come on leaders, be visionaries - not partial and selfish !
