Udupi, Dec 26: A week-long sea awareness adventure activity programme was organized for the NCC Cadets, NSS volunteers, active sports persons and for the delegates of Kallianpur.
The activity commencing from 2nd to the 30th December, sponsored by the University Grants Commission (UGC), New Delhi was inaugurated today Wednesday, Dec 26 at Milagres college, Kallianpur.
Prof. Peter D' Souza, the convenor of the said activity and H.O.D. of commerce, Milagres college welcomed the gathering.
Lt. Goldin B. Furtado, eastern naval command base at Vishakpatnam in his inaugural address exhorted the youth to play an active role in nation-building activities and serve the nation.
College principal Fr. Fred Mascarenhas presiding over the inaugural function congratulated Lt. Goldin Furtado for taking up a career in the Indian navy and congratulated his parents for supporting him.
According to Fr Mascarenhas, it is necessary to know the behaviour of the sea in the present times and understand its role in environmental changes.
Lt. Herald Monis, dept. of commerce and NCC officer of the college thanked the guests and audience. Prof. Jayaram Shettigar compered the programme. Prof. Augustin Dias, physical director was present on the stage. Prof. Melwin Rego, Diva Nambiar and Lt Goldin Furtado's parents were present on the occasion.
The said sea awareness adventure activity programmes include lecture sessions on 'Coastal Restricted Zone' by Dinakaran Bangera, 'Life at Sea' by P.O. Jagannath M of the naval wing of Udupi, 'Underwater Wonders' by prof. Melwin C Rego - H.O.D, sociology, Milagres college.
A visit to be organized to St Marys Island on 27th, visit to Thannir Bavi and NMPT on 28th and sand art training at Malpe beach and visit to Murdeswar beach on 29th.
The objective of the programme is to create an awareness among the delegates about marine life, benefits of sea and oceans, utilization of sea water energy etc. The programme is being sponsored by UGC.
