Indian businessman pays Rs 60 crore for unique Dubai number plate

Dubai, Oct 10 (Agencies) : An Indian businessman has paid around Rs 60 crore at an auction to grab a single-digit car registration plate in Dubai, feeding a passion for “unique” number plates.

Balwinder Sahani, who owns a Dubai-based property management company, spent AED 33 million (around Rs 60 crore) on the “D5” number plate, in an auction organised by the road authority, Gulf News daily reported Sunday.

“I have collected 10 number plates so far and I am looking forward to having more. It’s a passion. This number will go to one of my Rolls-Royces,” he said.

The daily said more than 300 bidders participated Saturday in the auction, which is organised every two months. Eighty special numbers were on offer.




Auctions for “unique” car plates have become a fashion in the glitzy United Arab Emirates with auction organisers frequently netting millions of dollars.

    Had the money was given to charity, it would have made a sure difference in the society and people would have blessed him. True it is his passion to have unique numbers. But its just a waste. Money power after all ... .....

    There are People in the world,who have some unusual tastes and collect unusual things which is rubbish for others ,but for them is unique,or costly.Not enough only to have Money but also have ..brain.

    Totally crazy. I know it is for him to decide how he spends money but such acts bring bad name to the nation. He would be remembered if he had built a small healthcare facility somewhere in India with that money.

    What do you think, you became big, you are great??? this money could have spent for some better use anywhere in the world, you could have fed many hungry/homeless/sick and better education. I am sure this guy maybe not paying his employees well.
