Bengal kangaroo court chops off woman's hair for adultery

Kolkata, Oct 13 (IANS): A woman's hair was chopped off allegedly as a punishment for adultery at the behest of a kangaroo court in West Bengal's Murshidabad district, the state police said on Thursday.

Two people have been arrested in connection with the incident.

According to locals, the 32-year-old woman -- a resident of the Chandpur village of Nowda area -- was accused of having an extra-marital affair and the village kangaroo court slapped her with a fine of Rs 6,000.

"The members of the kangaroo court allegedly beat up the woman and also forced her husband to cut off her hair as an exemplary punishment," a district police official said.

He added, "We have arrested two persons named Imadul Sheikh and Liton Sheikh based on the FIR lodged by the victim and her husband. The search for the third accused is on."

The woman had allegedly eloped with a man whom she had met recently.

However, both were brought back by the villagers, and the village headman set up a kangaroo court that charged the woman with adultery and handed down punishment.
