Madikeri, Oct 17: A lady and her daughter, who were washing clothes in the standing water of a stone quarry accidentally slipped and lost their lives together. This heart-rending incident occurred at Kallare village near Kodlipet on Sunday October 16.
Shobha (29) and her daughter, Vidyashree (11), lost their lives in this incident. Vidyashree, a fifth standard student, had accompanied her mother when the latter went to wash clothes in an artificial pond created in the pit of a stone quarry, as she had holiday.
When washing the clothes, Vidyashree accidentally slipped and fell into the water. Seeing that her daughter had drowned, Shobha jumped into the standing water to save her. She too lost her life. Dharmendra, son of Shobha, who was playing nearby, heard the alarm raised by his mother and rushed to the spot. He conveyed information about his mother and sister's drowning to people living nearby. People reached the spot and searched for the duo but failed.
Firemen who arrived there later from Somwarpet retrieved the bodies of mother and daughter. Postmortem was conducted on the spot before handing the bodies to the family.
Shobha was the wife of Anand from Kallare village, a labourer by profession. Anand, who was wailing loudly at his sudden loss, remained inconsolable for long.
Police circle inspector, Parashivamurthy and Shanivarasanthe station house officer, Mariswamy, visited the spot and registered a case.
