Myanmar's Suu Kyi calls for transparency in economic system


Nay Pyi Taw, Oct 23 (IANS): Myanmar State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi has called for transparency and accountability in economic system to relieve concern of entrepreneurs, official report said on Sunday.

Meeting with entrepreneurs and development partners here on Saturday, Suu Kyi called for upgrading the capacity building of the citizens, stressing the importance of the measure introduced for national development in the long run, Xinhua news agency reported.

She emphasised the prevalence of rule of law to attract foreign investors, inviting government members, donors and local entrepreneurs to get involved in formulating the national economic policy.

She expressed the government's commitment to modernising the agricultural sector of the country in the economic policy, pointing out that the agricultural sector stands the main sector on which the majority of the people are dependent upon.

Honouring local successful businessmen including top 158 tax payers, Suu Kyi stressed the importance of paying tax.

In fighting corruption, Suu Kyi urged the people to make formal complaint any time to her office directly or to the ministries concerned.

For rapid economic development, Suu Kyi called on the participants to help the new government with genuine efforts to be able to overcome the challenges, disclosing that the government has formed a committee with donor nations, donor organisations and development partners who want to help the country for its national development.

Suu Kyi also urged for grabbing the opportunity of US's recent lifting of economic sanctions, saying the opportunities will contribute not only to the development of the country but also to the region and the world.

She highlighted the inter-dependency of economic growth and political progress, saying that economic growth leads to sustainable political progress, and political progress results in economic stability.

The set meeting with Aung San Suu Kyi involved diplomats and businessmen.
