Mumbai: Cab driver cheated passengers by 'turning' Rs 500 notes into Rs 100

Mumbai, Oct 27 (Midday News): Cab driver cheated passengers by 'turning' Rs 500 notes into Rs 100A cab driver at Mumbai domestic airport has been nabbed for cheating passengers by exchanging Rs 500 notes with Rs 100 ones using sleight of hand.

According to a report in the Hindustan Times, the arrested taxi driver would ask passengers to give him change for Rs1,000. And, if the passenger gave him two Rs 500 notes, he would swiftly replace them with two Rs 100 notes, and then ask the passengers for more money.

The culprit, identified as Manoj Gurnani, was exposed after a passenger named Priyank Bhala registered a case against him. The driver as well as an agent Anand Kanyal (41), who would lead passengers to him, have been arrested.

Hindustan Times reported that the incident featuring Bhala took place 10 days ago. Bhala informed the paper that after he landed at the airport, Kanyal guided him to Gurnani, who rents tourist vehicles and works as a driver. The paper further reported that before starting his cab, Gurnani asked Bhala for change of Rs 1,000. “Bhala gave him two Rs 500 notes but Gurnani was already holding two Rs 100 notes. He made the change, convinced Bhala he had given two Rs100 notes and asked for change again,” a police source told the paper.

After getting off, Bhala realised that he had been cheated. He went back to the airport to find Gurnani, and also approached the police. The Hindustan Times report further said that the Airport police showed him a photo of Gurnani, who was earlier nabbed in a similar case before getting bail. On October 24, Gurnani was traced using his address and was arrested along with Kanyal, the Hindustan Times report added.

This happened to me back in 2000 and at that time i lost around 10,000Rs. I missed my connecting flight as the incoming international flight delayed. As I was exiting domestic (Jet Airways) terminal, a taxi driver with an accomplish approached and promised a ticket and Indian airlines but instead took me for a round and finally ped me infront of a hotel in santacruz. I had only 500 Rs currency and I don't know how they did it but soon realised I was taken for a ride and raised an alarm. By the time people gathered, they vanished from the scene and I was left poorer by 10000.
