Madikeri, Nov 1: “The decision of state government to celebrate Tippu Sultan birth anniversary through the department of Kannada and Culture even though Tippu Sultan had contributed nothing to Kannada language is condemnable,” said Member of Parliament (MP) Pratap Simha.

Speaking to reporters here, Pratap Simha said that the government has prepared to sideline social principles with the celebrations. “There is no scope for personal or idol worship in Islam. Tippu is a symbol of violence. Statewide agitations will be held if the government goes ahead with the celebrations”, Simha warned.

Meanwhile, former MP H Vishwanath speaking to reporters, called for detailed discussions on Tippu Sultan to prevent criticism. “There is scope for all types of celebrations under the constitution. It is not fair to incite people with falsehood. It is a government sponsored anniversary programme,” Vishwanath said.

“It is said that thousands of Kodavas were killed or converted by Tipu Sultan. It is necessary to find out what the population of Kodavas 250 years ago was and what their population now is. In the absence of proper evidence, let there be a forum for discussion on the subject. People should not create confusion by making statements as if they know complete history.” Vishwanath added.
