Udupi, Nov 4: After an autorickshaw hit the rear side of a trailer truck on national highway near Posar in Katapadi on the night of Wednesday, November 2, auto driver, Sadiq (33), and his wife, Mishriya (30), who were seated in the auto rickshaw, suffered critical injuries. Their three children, who were also in the auto rickshaw, had a providential escape and sustained minor injuries.

Sadiq, who operates an auto rickshaw at Katapadi, had visited a hotel by the side of the highway along with his wife and children after duty hours on Wednesday evening. He was returning to Katapadi from the direction of Kaup with them, when a trailer truck belonging to Navayuga company which has been executing highway widening work, suddenly turned to the extreme left, it is said. It is said that the driver of the truck was driving his vehicle irresponsibly  in dark conditions without any indicator lights.  The auto driver could not see the presence of the trailer on the rear side of the truck that suddenly came his way as there were no lights. The auto rickshaw was thoroughly mangled and the injured were stuck in the mangled auto rickshaw.  The locals, who worked for 45 minutes to release them from this position, took them to the hospital.

In this accident, one of the legs of Mishriya got severed. The severed portion of the leg was placed in a plastic sachet and taken to a private hospital at Mangaluru where surgery was conducted. Her other leg also got fractured. Mishriya is still in critical condition, it is said. Sadiq suffered extensive injuries to both legs and hands.  He too has been admitted into a hospital.

A case about this accident was registered in Kaup police station.
