Mangaluru, Nov 4: MLA of Mangaluru south constituency, J R Lobo inaugurated the basketball tournament for Association of ICSE and CBSE Schools of Udupi and DK districts (AICS) - Blaze 2016, at Lourdes Central School(LCS) on Friday November 4.
The MLA inaugurated the stage programme by lighting the lamp and later inaugurated the tournament by attempting to throw the ball into the hoop.
Speaking on the occasion he said, "We must give as much importance to sports and extra-curricular activities as we give academics. Once we enter the professional arena, we are recognised by the additional skills we possess and talents we exhibit and this school is known for its quality education. Even government officials who get transferred to other districts from here seek my assistance in admitting their children to this institute because of its quality education."
"Participation is the first step to success. It is easy to stay back and comment. One who takes the initiative and participates is a true winner. I wish good luck to all the participants," he added.
In his presidential address, the manager of LCS, Fr Wilson D'Souza said, "I welcome all the participants from both Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts to this tournament. I call upon everyone to witness a healthy competition with true sportsmanship. Sports is an integral education in itself. Through sports one can overcome nervousness and boost team spirit."
Vice principal of the school, Belita Mascarenhas welcomed the gathering, while the sports co-ordinator Pratibha K delivered the vote of thanks.
Principal of the school Fr Robert D'souza, sports convenor Veerendra Alva, John Pinto and others were present at the occasion.
About 23 AICS school teams across the two districts took part in the competition. Matches for the girls was organised at the school premises while Mangala Stadium Basketball Court is the venue for the boys.
Valedictory programme
‘A good beginning makes a good ending’. The valedictory programme was graced by Fr Wilson L Vitus D’Souza, manager of LCS, Fr Robert D’Souza, principal, Belita Mascarenhas, vice-principal, Sudhir Hegde, Inspector of Anti Corruption Bureau and Management Committee members. They addressed the gathering and appreciated all the participants and congratulated the winners.

Runners-up– Girls (Under17) category: Lourdes Central School, Bejai, Mangaluru
Winners: Little Rock Indian School, Brahmavar
Runners-up– Boys (Under 17) category: Mount Carmel Central School, Mangaluru
Winners: Lourdes Central School, Bejai, Mangaluru
Anita Pinto proposed the vote of thanks. Dilla Colaco and Linette Pereira compered the whole programme.
