Bidar, Nov 7: A third semester student of a private engineering college in the city hanged himself at his home on the late night of Saturday November 5. He was pursuing engineering degree course in civil engineering.

There is widespread suspicion that violent drugs mafia and ragging would have forced the youth to take this extreme step.

Sachin, who hailed from Jambagi village at Aurad village in the district, was staying at a rented home at Vidyanagar here. On Saturday late night, he wrote a death note and left it behind before ending his life. On the basis of the death note, the police questioned several students of his college. In the death note, Sachin said that Anjali Swamy, Munaf Fajim, Azhar Khan and Taufeeq had formed a group of people who have the habit of telling lies and cheating others. "Taufeeq happens to be the supporter of all these activities. The group is planning to murder me and currently pestering me for money," he stated. The death note is said to contain many other details.

However, district superintendent of police, Amrut Nikam, insisted that as per his information, Sachin committed suicide on account of personal misunderstanding and fights and not due to ragging.

On the basis of death note, policemen of Gandhiganj police station have arrested engineering students from the mechanical division of the college, Munaf Fajim, Anjali Swamy, Azhar Khan and Taufeeq after registering a case under section 306 of the Indian Penal Code for abetting this suicide. A female friend of the deceased was also interrogated.

Maternal uncle of Sachin, Sidram Shetkar, claimed that Sachin was harassed and forced into committing suicide by the drugs mafia prevalent in his college. He claimed that the same gang had earlier attacked Sachin, and fractured his hand. On another occasion, the gang members had chased Sachin around the college premises before beating him up and injecting him with some drugs. He said that Sachin had not revealed the actual happening to his parents, but just claimed that he had fallen off his motor bike.

Shetkar said that the gang had been harassing Sachin as he possessed a video footage of a ragging incident. He feels that proper check of Sachin's cellphone might reveal the contents of this video.

It is gathered that a girl student of this college had ended her life three months back, and the demand made by the victim's parents for thorough investigation into this death had not been acceded to.
