Panic run on ATMs as thousands rush to withdraw, deposit notes

New Delhi, Nov 8 (IANS): There was a panic run on ATMs across the Indian capital as Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared that Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes won't be legal tender from midnight Tuesday.

Tens of thousands of people rushed to the nearest ATMs in a desperate attempt to get hold of Rs 100 denomination notes and to deposit the 500 and 1,000 notes with them, IANS journalists reported.

Modi's nationally televised announcement, aimed at battling black money, spread rapidly, with friends telephoning and messaging one another.

At the Saket shopping malls, long queues quickly formed at all the ATM counters, with most people interested in depositing the Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes they had.

There was a lot of shouting as those in the rear of the queue egged on those in the front to quickly finish their transaction so as to beat the midnight deadline of Tuesday.

"What rubbish is this? All of us have been put into so much difficulty," a middle aged man said loudly to no one in particular.

A young man, seemingly in his 20s, turned abusive.

Three young women who had been shopping suddenly dropped everything and rushed to an ATM. An elderly man asked an IANS reporter: "Please tell me the location of the nearest ATM."

Rajiv Mitra, a professional in Noida, made a mistake by withdrawing money on Tuesday night -- and ended up getting more Rs 1,000 notes, as the ATMs were still dispensing the larger denomination notes.

Not everyone was critical though. A few felt that the sweeping government step may perhaps eliminate black money and entrenched corruption.

One man said he had come across a counterfeit Rs 500 note a few days back and underwent a lot of trouble because of that.

"At least now there won't be counterfeit currency any more," he said, talking to a small group of people.

Residents in residential colonies said shopkeepers, including chemists, were already refusing to accept the banned notes.

Even street vendors refused to accept 500 and 1,000 notes.

"I have bank employees as my customers and they warned me not to take these notes any more," said a man selling chaat near a Metro station in Noida.

"Yes, we are having problems now but the real problem will be faced by those who have hoarded lots and lots of cash with them," interjected one man who too said he was a vendor.

The government has said that ATMs will not function on Wednesday, and in some areas on Thursday too. Banks have been ordered closed on Wednesday.

Since PM Modi came to power,
    Beef Ban!
    Media Ban!
    Currency Ban!
They are more fond of 'Ban' letter from English dictionary than any other word.

These days government only revolves in 'chai pe charcha' and 'Gai pe charcha'.

People of India voted for Modi for change.First change they will print Rs2000 note.

If one print counterfeit in the past, Rs2000 won't be difficult. It is too premature to expect a big change eradicating corruption.

But Modi Bhaktha celebrating as if they won the rich overnight, when 2/3rd of majority is living below the poverty line.

Effect of 'Digital India',ATM withdrawal limited even you have money in the bank.

Incredible India and its Modi Bhakt.

    Jai Hind

That's the style of our 'FEKU'. Hats off to our PM. Now his critics will have to be quiet and accept PM's 52 inch chest. Many of them may have lost their 'hard earned black money'. When Karnataka's CM is busy with appeasement politics to bring his son into politics, our PM is working 24x7 to make India shining. Many of our corrupt politicians including from the BJP may have lost their sleep and I am sure they are now blaming their decision of supporting NaMo. Always Nation First. Jai Hind, Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan.

A true kind of “STABING FROM BEHIND” act by BJP Govt.. When bringing back “BLACK MONEY” from Switzerland in 150 days failed, in other words he lied. Now after almost 900 days (2 ½ years) Modi taught why he can not stab his own voters! If he told this during election campaign in 2014 BJP would not have got 3 seats forget about 300 seats.

Now let me ask you 1 point or rather a question. I am sure you are not effected with this. One of my Brahmin friend in my neighborhood in mangalore a Pakka BJP set his sisters marriage on November 15th. He withdrew 3 lakhs cash of 1000 rupees denominations on November 7th to buy gold. His family is supposed to go to gold shop on Nov. 10th. Ravi Anna you tell me how he can deal with this situation. Do you think this is black money. He asked my financial help now. He is not a rich guy. Through him I came to know. If this is your situation would you write like that? Now can you tell me DO YOU HAVE COMMON SENSE? If yes you would have reached somewhere!

Aachi din is taking place every day under the Modi Government. While the crude oil price is declining, oil price is going up in India.

The black money of the richest are very safe in the foreign banks he didn't the full list of the black money holders overseas, didn't share Rs. 15 lakh/person of the black money lottery.

Arun Jaitly did another surgical strike through his street venders black money looting.

Now the most urgent surgical strike of burning all the Rs 500 and 1000 from circulation creating long queue for the electorate of India.

How India can handle all these aachi din manna showers? How many millions are now faced with this manna shower of aachi din? How many billions of Rs. 100 takes to replace the Rs. 500 and 1000 currency? Holy pandemonium!
