SC to hear PILs on demonetisation of Rs 1,000 and 500 notes

New Delhi, Nov 15 (PTI): Amidst unprecedented panic rush in banks and ATMs across the country, the Supreme Court would today hear a batch of PILs seeking quashing of the government's decision to demonetise Rs 1,000 and Rs 500 currency notes on the grounds that it infringed citizens' right to life and trade among others.

A bench comprising Chief Justice T S Thakur and Justice D Y Chandrachud has listed for hearing as many as four pleas against the November 8 decison of the Narendra Modi government that these notes are no longer a legal tender.

Out of the four, two PILs have been filed by Delhi-based lawyers Vivek Narayan Sharma and Sangam Lal Pandey respectively. Two other pleas have been filed by individuals, S Muthukumar and Adil Alvi, on the demonetisation issue. The apex court, on November 10, had agreed to hear the pleas on Tuesday.

The petitioners have alleged that the sudden decision has created chaos and harassment to public at large and the notification of the Department of Economic Affairs, Ministry of Finance be either quashed or deferred for some time. The Centre has also filed a caveat in the registry saying it should be heard if the bench agrees to hear and pass orders on any such plea.

Sharma, in his plea, has termed the notification of DEA as "dictatorial", claiming that it did not grant reasonable time to citizens for exchanging the specified bank notes to legitimate notes to avoid "large scale mayhem, life threatening difficulties".

The plea has sought either quashing of the notification or a direction to the Centre for grant of "reasonable time frame" to citizens to exchange the demonetised currency notes to avoid difficulties being faced by the people.

The Prime Minister, in a televised address to the nation, had declared that high denomination notes of Rs 500 and Rs 1000 will no longer be legal tender from November 8-9 midnight. He had said the Government has declared a "decisive war" against black money and corruption.

It is a great relief that the SC has decided to hear the petititioners against demonetization. The deaths of many poor citizens (some who died standing in the queue in banks) reported by the press (as on date it has touched 25 as per reported news) can now be averted if an interim order is given. None of the citizens are against the move to unearth black money but the way it was uted without common sense by the Modi Government has put the poorest of the poor and the middle class to grave hardship. This is what hurts the nation. SC should pass strictures against Modi and Jaitley for this mess.

    Zetigeist,

“Sudden affection towards poor and black money problems “…..but you seem to be living with full comforts. Possible that you have enough sources or had enough small denominations stocked for the rainy days that's why you are least bothered about others. Try to have some kind heart towards under privileged. One more thing, while spitting always watch down and do it.
Rich, wealthy and party members and their associates would never suffer from the likely effect but most of the common man have already had bad effect on their day to day living.

WRONG DECISION. IF HE WANTS TO END CORRUPTION. HE WOULDNT HAVE RE-INTRODUCED NEW 500,1000

AND NOW FOR MORE CORRUPTION HE INTRODUCED 2,000 NOTES. WHICH WILL DOUBLE THE CORRUPTION.

INSTEAD OF 2000. 200 NOTE WOULD HAVE BEEN BETTER. BIG TRANSACTIONS WOULD HAVE BEEN GONE THROUGH CREDIT CARD, DEBIT CARD OR CHEQUE.

IF HE WANTS TO END CORRUPTION HE WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN INTRODUCED NEW NOTES OF 500 1000 2000 NOTES.

BJP is a party of scammers of mega portion. There is a facebook post, saying 1st wicket down on black money. The post targets Singvi - the congress person, saying he is forced to pay 52crore fine, post demonitization.

Its a lie. This case was going on since Yr. 2012. There is absolutely no connection between the two and further, IT department is yet to work on any cases of black money post demonitzation.

Since Modi and BJP is cursed by common people, they are planting stories, which are far from truth as a face saver.

    Nothing but Dictatorial action.

If only the PM takes the liberty and acts on his own then why the Parliament, Expert committee, Opposition parties, SC, President etc. Culprits should be traced caught and punished by legal or secret agents. Even at this critical juncture there CA agents and other brokers take the opportunity to turn the black money into white on commission basis. Where we will land only time will tell.
