Demonetisation a case of organised loot and legalised blunder: Manmohan Singh

NEW DELHI, Nov 24 (Agencies) : Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Thursday said that he doesn't disagree with the government's objectives of acting against black money and terrorism, but there has been "monumental mismanagement" in implementation of demonetisation.Speaking in the Rajya Sabha in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, ex-PM Manmohan Singh asked the government to come up with constructive proposals to implement the demonetisation.

Highlights of the speech:

Those who say demonetisation is good in the long run should recall quote "In the long run we are all dead".

GDP can decrease by up to 2 percent point due to demonetisation move.

Cooperative banking sector which is serving large number in rural sector is not operational.

I want to ask PM that can he name any country where people have deposited their money but are not able to withdraw it.

PM said wait for 50 days but for the poor section even 50 days can be detrimental.

55% people are in the agricultural sector are badly affected.

60-65 people have lost their lives, what has been done can weaken our people's confidence in currency and banking system.

"Singh thinks the Goods and Services Tax (GST) as well as demonetization have hit the economy, but while GST is a good idea implemented badly, the very idea of demonetisation was wrong."
Such serious criticism from MMS(a well known personality on economics), need to be answered with convincing facts and figures by the govt. The perception among the people on Note ban and GST, is not good, and people are feeling hard pressed and in more difficulties due to Note ban and GST. It would have been better if the govt , would have taken opposition leaders like MMS, in confidence before announcing important policy decisions like, note ban and GST. Now also, Govt may have a meeting with all experts on finance and take remedial measures. Time has come when our leaders must rise above their party's interest and must think for the all round development, without much criticism on highly important and sensitive matters.

Demonetisation a case of organised loot and legalised blunder: Manmohan Singh - Dr MMS rarely speaks and when he does he hits the nail at the right spot. Jean Dreze also spoke of demonetisation very effectively when he said " In a booming economy, demonetisation is like firing at the tyres of a racing car". True the economy is moving at a snails pace. Modi and his partymen instead say they have resorted to 'Surgical Strike' and given the people 'Chadak Chai'. Chadak Chai is injurious to the body when the chaiwallah boils and overboils the same tea leaves over and over again. God save us.

The maximum black money was generated during the 2004-14 as well as the period was engulfed in various scams like 2G and coal scam.
We are not surprise that they did not like the anti-black money measures the government has taken...Those who did not consider the generation of so much black money and scams during their regime as blunder are now finding the crusade against black money as blunder,"
Stressing that demonetisation decision will have a "positive" impact on the economy, Jaitley said, "This (the move) will have positive impact as far as the medium and long terms are concerned. Lot of shadow money will become part of banking system (due to demonetisation).".

I absolutely Agree with you that Dr MMS is one of the finest economists that our country has produced. His resume is one of the best we could ever see.

If the Congress had used him as a Finance Minister and had an able person to lead the country, things would have been different. But using him as a puppet was an utter failure. It was no more than giving him the position without any powers.

And we also realise that he can speak only now. Wish he had done that more often in the 10 (TEN) YEARS that he had. Unless if you think 10 years is not enough time.

I am really keen to see your counter argument for this. Sir!

While demonetisation is within the government's competence, there is no law in India that can prevent a person from drawing money from his own bank account. Nevertheless, in the last two weeks government has prevented people from the drawing their own money. This act of the government is patently illegal and unlawful and needs to be challenged in a court of law.

I do not think that such contol applies on others who had deposits or balance before the new rule came into existence. Maybe there is a tracking system on black money deposited.

That means the middle man will have to wait for the commission promised. (30%)
