Unemployed Punjab teachers climb water towers in Sukhbir's constituency

Chandigarh, Dec 1 (IANS): Raising the level of protest, quite literally, 40-odd unemployed persons qualified to be appointed teachers on Wednesday climbed water towers in 15 villages in Jalalabad, the assembly segment of Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal, to seek jobs.

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MP Bhagwant Mann met with the group of protesting teachers in Jalalabad constituency on Wednesday and even climbed a water tower to express support.

These jobless protesters -- who have done Elementary Teacher Training (ETT) course -- from the Unemployed Teachers Union of Punjab earlier this month climbed two mobile phone towers in state capital Chandigarh's VIP zone.

Two protestors, who climbed the tower on November 3, have refused to come down till their demand for jobs is met.

"Our activists will not come down until our major demand of getting regular jobs is met," ETT Association President Amarjit Singh Kamboj said.

The association had met Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal on November 26 but the parleys failed.
