M'lore: Passengers Injured in Ghastly Accident Recovering

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangalore (RD)

Mangalore, Jan 26: Three people who were critically wounded in an accident at Jeppinamogaru here on Saturday January 26 morning are recovering in the hospital. The ghastly accident took place when the victims' Maruti Omni hit an electric pole resulting in the death of eight people while injuring three.

Sanjay, Rajesh, Pramod, Veerendra yane Papya, Sudhir, Ravi, Devaraj and Prasad Acharya were charred to death owing to electrocution. Devaraj and Prasad were residents of Kotekar, located on the outskirts of the city while others were migrant construction labourers hailing from Bihar.  The accident occurred when they were being dropped to their quarters after working overnight in a housing site at Beeri near Kotekar.

There are speculations that the Omni was fitted with an auto-LPG which exploded when it came in contact with live wires that fell on the vehicle but as no part of hard casings of metal was found at the accident spot, it could also have been a petrol-driven vehicle or perhaps with both the modes working as standby. As a result of electrocution eight passengers were burnt alive instantly while the rest sustained multiple injuries.

The Omni was found to be carrying more passengers than its capacity of 5-6 persons.  Altogether, there were 11 passengers including the driver travelling in the car. Moreover, drowsiness due to lack of sleep on the part of the driver could also be a cause for the tragedy.
