Bantwal, Jan 4: A head constable died after a tanker ran into him at Melkar here on Wednesday January 4.
The deceased has been identified as Rukmayya (48), head constable of Puttur town police station and resident of Porlipady near Kalladka.
It is learnt that Rukmayya was waiting to catch a bus when the accident took place.
Despite the road at Melkar getting widened, the space for bus stop is inadequate. When there are no buses stopping here, the passing vehicles tend to speed away leaving little space for people to wait for buses.
Rukmayya had come to Melkar for some work. While waiting for the bus for the return journey home, a tanker hit into him, causing grievous head injuries. Though he was rushed to hospital, he passed away soon after.
A soft-spoken man, Rukmayya had served in Bantwal town, Vittal and other police stations. His people-friendly approach had won him trust from the local public.
He leaves behind his wife and two sons.
Expressing condolence at the sudden demise of Rukmayya, Dakshina Kannada SP Bhushan Borase said, "Head constable Rukmayya was a very sincere and hard-working policeman. On behalf of Dakshina Kannada police family, we offer our deepest condolences. May his soul rest in peace. May God give strength to his family to bear this trauma."
Bantwal traffic police have registered a case.
