Imam issues 'fatwa' against PM, BJP demands his arrest

Kolkata/New Delhi, Jan 8 (PTI): The Imam of a Kolkata mosque on Saturday issued a 'fatwa' against Prime Minister Narendra Modi, accusing him of "bluffing" the people through demonetisation, evoking a sharp reaction from BJP which demanded his arrest.

Syed Mohammad Nurur Rahman Barkati, the Shahi Imam of Kolkata's Tipu Sultan Masjid, said, "Everyday people are harassed and facing problem due to demonetisation."

"Modi is bluffing the society and the innocent people of the country through demonetisation and nobody wants him to continue as the Prime Minister," he said during a joint conference by the All India Majlis-e-Sura and All India Minority Forum here.

Slamming the 'fatwa', BJP National Secretary Sidharth Nath Singh, who is in-charge of party's West Bengal affairs, said in Delhi, "We demand that Mamata Banerjee immediately order his arrest. The fatwa against our Prime Minister is highly condemnable. TMC MP Idris Ali was sitting next to him when he issued the fatwa."

Warning of protets if the state government did not take any action against the imam, Singh said, "This is not an issue between BJP and TMC. This is an insult of the Prime Minister by a religious leader considered close to the Chief Minister."

Earlier Barkati alleged, "People who keep beard are mostly religious like maulanas, sadhus, sufis, sikh gurus.. But Modi keeping beard is 'bhondami' (bluffing). I have no hesitation in saying that he (Modi) is bluffing the country. He (Modi) has lost all his credentials as the Prime Minister."

Terming Modi "communal" and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee as a figure of "communal harmony", he claimed that most of the people in the country now want Banerjee to be the Prime Minister of the country.

Last month Barkati had issued a 'fatwa' against BJP state president Dilip Ghosh for his comments against Banerjee.

We are in a democratic set-up and every citizen has the right to comment, raise the concern, express his views.
However, in this case vested interest or media misguiding the people by use of the word Fatwa. Religion and religious people should adhere to religious preaching for the welfare of their community they belong. Applicable to all Religious Gurus,Swamys,Priest etc etc.

Question: Why so much hatred & frustrations

Answer: Failed government policies, poorly implemented governance, back door support to demonetize to convert old notes, and fake promises on daily basis.

Being a BLIND Bakht, it is difficult to understand.

See your own comments and read them. Also, once in while see your own face in a mirror and acknowledge what you say and how you say it to express the BLIND support.

You will understand better when it impacts YOU and your pocket.

Imam also a common citizen of this country and he have full fundamental rights to criticize the govt when it committed the mistakes. If anybody criticized Modi or Central govt, BJP wants them to put in Jail and want to branded them as anti nationals. Indian is democratic country, BJP's this strategy will not workout here.

FATWA is basically using for " Point of Islamic law given by a recognized authority" and its apply for within Islamic culture and whoever given Fatwa that most come in scholars panel discussion not by individually.

Here Bengal Imaam "condemn" on demonetization social issue this is not Fatwa. basically any "Imaam" condemn any matter that we point of Fatwa which is not related with Islam.

BJP raising issue just because he is Muslim Imaam. thats it.

A few months ago I was asked by a friend to authenticate his translation of a FATWA given by a Pakistani Imam against a Christian couplefor tearing Koran pages and burnng them. The Fatwa d that whoever finds this couple can kill them on sight. The document was to be produced to Immigration authorities who were considering the application for asylum of the Pakistani couple. That is what a Fatwa is. It can be issued against anyone for blasphemy against Islam or for other reasons such as mockery, as the Indian Nobel prize winner received a few years ago from a Bangladesh imam.
Now, coming to some favourable comments from other readers backing the imam, I think the imam by issuing a death threat is committing a crime against the Indian Penal Code which applies to him, and the punishment for that and for anyone who kills in the name of god must face RI for 25 years if not death penalty under the Penal Code. Indian Penal Code trumps sharia law under which the fatwa is issued. Sharia is illegal in India, and despite the cry of a large number of muslims it must be d illegal.
