Kundapur, Jan 8: A young married woman ended her life on Saturday January 7 by consuming poison, allegedly due to dowry harassment by her in-laws.

The deceased has been identified as Jyothi (26), wife of Umesh Poojary, son of Paddu Poojary, residents of Hanebachalu in Ajri under Shankaranarayana police limits here.

Jyothi, daughter of Krishna Poojary and Ratna Poojarthi of Balkur, tied the knot with Umesh Poojary about eight months ago in an arranged marriage. It is said that after marriage, Umesh went to Bengaluru to work in a hotel, while Jyothi stayed with Umesh's parents and siblings here.

It is alleged that in her husband's absence, the in-laws harassed Jyothi for dowry, and she revealed this to her parents when she visited them, sources said. Her parents consoled her saying things would get better, and sent her back to the in-laws' house. It is learnt that Jyothi had come to her parental house again a few days ago and stayed for two or three days.

However, as the matter turned worse, Jyothi was unable to bear the alleged harassment and decided to end her life on Saturday, it is said. She went to the fields on the pretext of spraying pesticides, and instead consumed posion, sources said.

Following her death, Jyothi's parents approached the Shankaranayarana police and filed a complaint.

The body was taken to Kundapur mortuary and post-mortem would be conducted on Sunday January 8, sources said.

O my God,how many young women killed themselves by suecide, only because of this dowry harassment.cant do anything against this?Girls should I find instead of getting harassed and suecide, either go to police and complain, when husband is not listening, or stay away in a seperate house with husband.Either he should do something so that wife is happy,or live seperate.when he wants wife ,let him come to a conclusion of not to harass her any more.

What the Women and Child Development Minister Ms. Maneka Gandhi, admitted on the floor of the Lok Sabha was startling, between 2012 and 2014, around 25,000 women either committed suicide or were killed due to dowry harassment this vindicates the claim of women’s movement in India. Taunts, mental and physical abuse and ultimate death by murder or ‘forced-to-commit-suicide’ is an open fact of the Indian society. While dowry and dowry-facts domestic violence are reprimanded by Law, its continuance raises many questions. The sheer numbers of incidences, low conviction rates and voices against for change in law are disturbing and raise an alarm for all of us. No one is unaffected by this.

By mere extrapolating the figures placed on record by the government – if in 2016, 20 women are killed every day, 4,68,000 married women have been killed in India due to tortures related to dowry. These are only the reported numbers, the ones that came to notice. In reality the number of women killed due to this is much more. Resultantly, we can say that over 5 lakh women have been killed for dowry in India.
Whereas PM Modi has set its priorities on 'Uniform civil code' and 'Triple Talaq'.
    Dowry deaths is India’s Shame.

Partly the blame is on dowry system and also her husband's inhablity to clar the matter with his parents.
" It is alleged that in her husband's absence, the in-laws harassed Jyothi for dowry"
Whether or not her husband too had joined his parents in demanding the dowry or he is innocent in the matter yet to be knows.
Some guys die for their wives and some die for their wealth. Too bad.
Some strict law should be initiated against forced dowry.

Its mothers who should fight against dowry systems because they were daughters once.
Enough awareness has been created against dowry system and Society must have the will power to follow them rather blaming governments. police can only book the culprit.
Hope women's commission start working on it just as molestation case in B'luru

Girls parents also to be blamed as instead of complaining of harassment earlier waited till death. Once the person is dead whats the use of filing a case?. GIRLS ALSO instead of succumbing to pressure should come out and expose the vultures in the guise of human beings. May her soul rest in peace.

Our people have always blamed western culture for their dresses, drinks and dances. Now what do our so-called cultured intellectuals say when it comes to dowry, lavish weddings and high profile celebrations??

I want police to arrest girl`s parents. They are partly responsible for this.

It is the duty of every parent to protect their girl child and to support her in every way. Its sad that parents just consider girls as burden.

    Jenifer,

I disagree with you. There are laws against dowry. Law enforcement authorities can only take action if they are reported. Now do you why people dont report it? Because if it is reported the marriage is definitely going to end. Now society can force the couple stay married, but wouldnt that be against their personal freedom.

I blame our culture for this. People have to remove from their minds the idea of dowry. Then no one will expect dowry and no one will demand dowry.
