Mumbai, Jan 8: The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) arrested a woman residing in Vasai, on Saturday, for trying to smuggle over six kilograms of gold jewellery into the country.

The accused, Farida Hajuri, had been making regular trips to Dubai over the past couple of months. DRI officials had received information last week that a large amount of gold jewellery would be smuggled in by a female carrier arriving from Dubai, who wouldn’t declare the same to the customs authorities. Accordingly, a trap was laid.

Hajuri landed in the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport early on Saturday morning, after taking a direct flight from Dubai. As she cleared the green channel at Terminal 2, DRI officials intercepted her and asked to go through her luggage.

They recovered three bubble-wrapped packets containing 6.053 kgs of gold, worth Rs 1.16 crores.

“Hajuri admitted that she was a member of a smuggling syndicate that routinely sent carriers to India. These people were paid to carry gold jewellery from countries in the Middle East to India,” said a DRI official.

“We are interrogating her to find out how much gold jewellery she has brought in the past and to find the remaining members of the group,” continued the official.

Hajuri has been booked under several sections of the Customs Act and will be produced in court on Sunday.
