Woman dies onboard SpiceJet flight, family accuses airline of negligence

New Delhi, Jan 12 (India Today) : A 34-year-old woman died on a SpiceJet flight, flying from Mumbai to Varanasi, earlier today. 

She died while the aircraft was airborne, and now her family has alleged negligence on part of the airline.

The deceased woman, Sangeeta, a resident of Varanasi, was flying with her husband and daughter in Flight SG 704. The woman is said to have complained of ill health halfway through the journey and subsequently collapsed.

The family has filed a complaint of negligence on part of the airline crew, who allegedly failed to provide medical assistance.

Meanwhile, SpiceJet in a statement has rubbished the allegations saying Sangeeta was "attended to by a doctor onboard,".

"A passenger travelling on board SG 704 from Mumbai to Varanasi complained of breathlessness. The passenger was attended to by a doctor onboard and assisted by SpiceJet cabin crew. She was provided with all necessary medical assistance. The captain informed ATC and requested for medical assistance on landing."

Sangeeta was attended at the airport upon landing, and taken to the nearest hospital where she was declared 'brought dead'. A postmortem is to take place to ascertain the exact reason of the death.

    This is very sad indeed! The flying passenger takes the small risk of sudden heart failure and there is nothing one can do except the intervention of a medical practitioner if one is on board, as it has happened here. No blame can be attached to the airline or its staff. The husband of the diseased is foolish enough to file a lawsuit which will be thrown out of court, he seems to want to profit by the tragedy!

    2 Times it had happened with me suddenly Flight crew called any Dr on board one of the passenger is having severe breathless ness.By Gods grace both the cases patient successfully treated.But no rewards from airline.One was Jetairways Second time Indigo.

    Thank you Dr. S. Kamath for rescuing 2 patients on board. I remember about 3 years ago you also published in this very same site a long list of medicines that are prohibited in GCC without prescription. I am sure you did it without expecting any reward. Indeed your efforts are worth rewarding.

    Airlines prime duty is to provide regular public service of air transport and safety of passengers while travelling in the air. Staff are trained for basic first aid or basic medical assistance.

    Easy to blame but we must understand that the flight is not like travelling by road to rush to hospitals on an emergency case. Even the crew member may fall sick suddenly. Is there 100% guarantee of next moment?

    What happened is sad indeed.

    It is tragedy for the family. May her soul rest in peace. But SpiceJet is not responsible for it. Least to say, that woman did not die while on board due to negligence on part of the airlines.

    Women have to check their health specifically about heart and disease problems.

    It is said, Men have symptoms which can be ascertained to heart disease, but women's heart disease problem symptoms are completely different and very much silent type.

    These have come to light, after recent passing away of the Hollywood actress Carrie fisher who died of heart attack, while next day her mother Debbie Raynolds died.

    No need to blame Spice Jet. It's not hospital it's flight. They can't land on national high for passenger. Myself I travelled to Mumbai/ Dubai flight 2 times. If passenger got sick on board what flight company can do? Comparison to other airlines Spice jet giving good customer service only there is no free food on board. They can't ask fitness certificate for each passenger. It's passenger responsibility to take care about thier health. If they travel by train to whom they blame? Even you can't get medical assistance for miles .
