Mangaluru, Jan 12: Home minister Dr G Parameshwara on Thursday January 12 launched 25 new patrolling vehicles of Mangaluru city police at the city commissionerate office here.
After receiving the guard of honour, Parameshwara in his address said, "The new vehicles equipped with tablets and GPS devices will help the police in reaching trouble spots quickly. The response time of police will be just five minutes using the new vehicles.
"We are planning to launch the same in Mysuru, Belagavi, and Hubballi in two weeks. In Bengaluru, a total of 362 patrolling vehicles have been launched. Mangaluru is the second city to get new patrollling vehicles," he said.
Stressing on the need to enhance security, the home minister said, "We need to take preventive measures to curb crimes in the city, as people's safety is the priority. By providing patrolling vehicles, it makes it easy for police to reach the crime spot on time."
Regarding recruitment of police personnel, he said that 16,000 constable have already been recruited across the state. "Process is on to recruit 8,000 more constables and 1,000 sub-inspectors. The written test is over and selection process is on.
"Earlier, constables were promoted once in 22 years, but now this period has been reduced to 10 years so that by the time they retire, they will be in higher posts like ASI," he said.
On the assault case against Kagwad MLA Raju Kage, who is said to be absconding along with his family, the home minister said that FIR has been lodged and investigation is on, and assured that the government would take strict action to ensure that the accused do not go scot-free.

Mangaluru: Parameshwara urges youth to follow Swami Vivekananda's ideals

Mangaluru, Jan 12: Home minister G Parameshwara on Thursday January 12 inaugurated 'Arpana' programme of Ramakrishna Math on the occasion of Youth Day, held to commemorate the 154th birthday anniversary of Swami Vivekananda at Ramakrishna Math here.
Addressing the gathering, Parameshwara said, "Swami Vivekananda walked in the path of several eminent scholars who delivered strong message to the world. At a very young age, Swami Vivekananda's message had positive impact on the entire world and it still remains fresh among the people even in the 21st century. Swami Vivekananda always thought about the poor people and contemplated on how to bring them to the mainstream society.
"Swami Vivekananda had confident in the ability of the youth to build the nation and in his 39 years of journey he inspired many youths with his ideology and thoughts which will still remain in the minds of young people," he added.
Quoting Swami Vivekananda's statement 'anything which makes you weak physically, intellectually, spiritually, reject it as a poison', Parameshwara said, "Today several youths are victims of drugs. I urge youngsters to reject it as a poison and walk in the path of Swami Vivekananda.
"Youth need to be aware about their responsibilites. Our youths have proved to the world that India is a country of technical manpower. Youths need to take forward the guidance of Swami Vivekananda," he added.
Referring to the recent incidents of molestation in Bengaluru, the home minister said, "My first priority as home minister was to protect women and children, but there are some instances where women are victims and we are trying our best to curb such incidents. On the other hand we are proud that women are coming forward and contributing to the society in every field."
President of Math Swami Jitakamanadaji said, "The present generation is more brilliant as comparated to the previous generation, but lacks mental strength. Youths need to strengthen themselves to face problems and have the ability to distinguish between good and bad around them, which in turn can help them achieve their goals."
The Math will distribute branded clothes worth 1.25 crore to beneficiaries in Puttur and Sullia. The cloth distribution will go on for a fortnight from Thursday till January 30.
