Mangalore, Feb 11: In an unfortunate incident a young final year engineering student of National Institute of Technology Karnataka (NITK) drowned to death in the sea near Suratkal here on Sunday, February 10.
The deceased is understood to be from Paravoor near Kochi in Kerala state and has been identified as Rohit Haridas aged 21 years. He is the son of Haridas and Usha. Haridas was a telecom engineer who was earlier an NRI working in the gulf. He is also survived by his sister Megha.
According to eye-witness accounts, Rohit was enjoying himself with his friends near Suratkal beach late on Saturday February 9 when suddenly a huge wave engulfed him and he was pulled into the sea. Later his body was discovered at Doddakopla shore at around 3 pm on Sunday Feb 10.
Rohit was a brilliant student with an excellent academic record. According to sources, he had already been selected by a well-known company through a campus interview recently.
The news of his missing from the hostel was known only on Sunday morning by his batchmates, although his body was washed away on Saturday night itself. A case has been registered at the Suratkal police station.
