Mangalore, Feb 14: A mammoth exercise, Post Graduation Common Entrance Test (PGCET-2007), eventually turned out to be an exercise in futility wasting precious hours, money of 1,370 students and Mangalore University.

Following a communication from Mysore University and Principal Secretary on Thursday afternoon, Mangalore University cancelled the PGCET planned for 11 PG Courses at three centres in Madikeri, Udupi and Mangalore from July 20.

The University issued a press release instructing students keen on enrolling for M Sc courses (in Biotechnology, Biochemistry, Chemistry, Physics, Microbiology), MA courses (History, Economics, Political Science), MSW, M.Ed and M Com to submit fresh applications along with a fee of Rs 400.

After Inter University Board (IUB) decided to go ahead with the PGCET-2007, despite criticism from BJP, JD(S) and Congress elected representatives, a dozen co-ordination meetings were held in Mangalore and Mysore to ensure that the new system was without any flaws.

Mangalore University had pressed its entire men and machinary for distribution and collection of applications.

About 2,000 students had responded to Mangalore University’s press releases and advertisements on appearing before PGCET.

As many as 1,370 students among them had submitted applications along with a DD drawn in favour of Mysore University. The total money about Rs 4.62 lakh had been deposited with Mysore University.

Anxious students keen on gaining admission in Mangalore University had downloaded the model question papers from Mysore university’s website, www.uni-mysore.ac.in.

Mysore University meanwhile is working on the modalities to return DDs to students. The hurried students would now have to go through it all over again of travelling, obtaining and submitting the completed applications to Mangalore University.

According to a press release from Mangalore University, the completed applications along with a fee of Rs 400 should be submitted to Mangalore University before July 25.
