The passenger, identified as Abdur Rub (21), a native of Bhatkal was arrested at around 10.30 pm on Thursday February 2 when he was about to board the Jet Airways flight 9w532 to Dubai, stated press release from the DRI here on Friday February 3.

When Abdur was about to proceed towards the emigration counter after completing his check-in formalities to board Jet Airways flight, the officers stopped him and on thorough examination of his checked-in and the hand baggage, the officers found that bundles of foreign currency were deftly concealed inside tea packets and other confectionery packets.

Assorted foreign currency comprising of US dollars, Saudi riyals, UAE dirham and Australian dollars adding up to Rs 35,02,900 in terms of their value in Indian rupee, were recovered from Abdur Rub and seized under the provisions of Customs Act, 1962 read with FEMA Rules and RBI guidelines issued in this regard.

Upon interrogation, Abdur Rub admitted the offence and stated that he had purchased the said foreign currency from some underground operators in Bhatkal and was carrying it to Dubai for making payments/investments in connection with the garment business being run by his family members and relatives over there.

Dylan, why can't you try to trade the same through Mangalore Airport, then you will come to know whether Custom Authorities will leave you without checking?

Later you will get the answer for your present question.

Indirectly you are thinking other passengers are coming out freely without any checking??

Even before the introduction of Foreign Exchange Management Act, 1999, NRI's current account income has been granted almost a total convertibility. The Reserve Bank of India has further liberalized the Rules for convertibility and has gone further by declaring total convertibility of hitherto non-repatriable income mainly being principal amount of Non Resident Non Repatriable (NRNR) deposits and legacies to the tune of US$ 10,00,000/- p.a.

There is no limit to carry foreign exchange from India to any country. However the currency must be declared by filing CDF (Currency Declaration Form) if : the aggregate value of foreign currency notes is in excess of USD 5000 or equivalent or the aggregate value of foreign currency in the form of currency notes, bank notes or traveller cheques is in excess of $10,000 or its equivalent.

Mangalore custom always misguide the passenger and hides the truth. To my personal experience MIA also once accounted my used clothes in custom by officer. When I have asked to provide the documents stating they pulled some printed copies which doesn't have any explanation.

Also I would like to request Daijiworld to report accurately with specifying violation.
