Mangaluru: Shaun D'Souza arrested for lending at high interest, defrauding borrowers

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Feb 6: Police personnel attached to Barke station in the city have arrested Shaun D'Souza (36) from Bokkapatna here. D'Souza has been accused of running the business of lending at exorbitant rates of interest and then cheating people by asking them to return huge sums which were disproportionate to the amounts borrowed.

80 blank cheque leaves pertaining to various banks, five stamp papers, and Rs 7,500 in cash were recovered from his possession.

Allegedly, Shaun used to promise people to lend them money at cheap rates of interest. He has been accused of collecting signed blank cheques from them towards repayment. Later, he would fill fancy amounts in the signed cheques and threaten the borrowers to repay the sums mentioned therein. Failing compliance, he allegedly threatened them of booking cheque bounce cases against them and also harassed them to pay back unduly large sums, complainants say.

The police said that they conducted raid on Shaun's house on Sunday based on complaints made by people from Kodikal, Suratkal and other places, who had borrowed money from him. It is gathered that relating one such case of harassment, a person was attacked two days back, after which Shaun himself had got admitted into hospital. Police say that during their investigation, they found out that Shaun had faked injury to hoodwink policemen.

Barke police inspector, Rajesh, accompanied by other personnel, had conducted the said raid.

The guys who took the loan must have asked money on loan because they would get it easily, now when they cant pay back doing the unnecessary drama, because they ask loan with money lenders because they need money urgently and i guess some of these morons who had taken the loan have thrown the money on betting that happens in and around urwa. Now the issue happens because the guys cant repay, first get those people in jail who took the loan from him.

There are hundreds who lend money which is not a illegal business?
There are thousands who are in need of money borrow.
How can we say those who lend are cheating or fraud. If the interest is high then the borrower should go to a bank. Banks atleast lend public money and then build up NPAs.

Money lenders are not running charity business !

Interest rate charged on mutually agreed terms and hence there is no point in cheating. In an emergency situation, people borrow money on short term basis with high interest rate and there is nothing illegal about it. Pay Day loan, car title loans, pawn shops etc. are running their brisk business by charging as high as 360% p.a. in the western countries. This business is legal. No one is forcing anyone to accept the rate of interest. People normally borrow for medical expenses, bail bond to come out of the jail or some quick turn over for a business. One cannot be at the mercy of bureaucratic banks in an emergency situation. Banks too harass the loan defaulters. Will these police arrest the bank Chairman and call him a cheater?

I am not supporting Shaun D'Souza here but just wanted to make my point across.

I'm agree with your thought sir..
Banks are indirectly steeling our money by various charges after keeping our Property Documents, Gold & etc.. Even various banks had various loan rates, but tax deduction is same for our money without knowing us.. Is anybody complained/caught bank manager/chairman for indirect silent fees.. Many business mans were make deal with bank manager in Bars/Restaurant/Outside places by giving commission to them to approve the huge amount loan & they runaway without paying loan & then bank declared as bankrupt. Is it called as legal steeling..??

Misusing the desperation all the way.
Lenders very well know that borrowers will be unable to repay. Still they lend. And bleed the borrowers to the abyss.

Arrest should have been for both parties. You can’t call it a " FRAUD". Hello People wake up. When you need money you are ready to pay any amount of interest and when it comes to pay you approach police.
You are using phrases like “CHEAT”. Definition of CHEAT has changed.....Do you have any legal documents for borrowing money, were the blank cheques and property documents robbed from your premises? Do you hold legal documents for the deal? Was the interest amount mentioned in writing? When in the first instance you have not gone legally then how do you involve the police in to this? I am not supporting any of the acts but yes I blame both parties involved. If the bank is not giving you a loan then obviously the borrower also seems to be a FRAUD. You hold proper documents Bank should be giving you a loan that too at a fair interest rate. We are in the century where everything should be black and white, if he promised low interest rates, was it in writing?
The Lender should have filed a case of Cheat /FRAUD for not paying the borrowed money........
Media needs to focus on right news.... I was forced to put up my opinion.

The lenders exist because of borrowers . There is a reason why they don't go to banks to borrow and go these lenders . When you don't complain while taking the money how can you complain when it is time to repay back . I think if they want legit borrowing they should go to the bank and stop going to these lenders . Who are you to believe the lenders or borrowers about the money loaned to them and the amount , looks like an easy way to get away from returning the borrowed money .

Initiate "Operation Kubera" like the previous Kerala Government.

Put behind bars all these meter interest goons and their chelas behind bars. They never pay any taxes. They do most of these transactions through cash/black money of real estate and illegal activities. There are plenty of them out there roaming in posh cars and acting like sober men.

Let them pay for the blood money they collected.
