Udupi, Mar 10: 'While the adult sex ratio in the district is in favour of women, the child sex ratio is in favor of the boys," informed deputy commissioner P Hemalatha here on Saturday March 8.  

Speaking on the occasion of the 'International Women’s Day' organized by the Taluk Mahila Mandali Union (TMMU) in association with District Legal Service Authority (DLSA) and Lions and Lioness clubs of Malpe at Rajanagana, she opined that comparatively women in the district are far better off than the women of other districts.

This is largely due to the matri-lineal system that is being followed by some communities and the education imbibed, she added. She said in the district there are 1,130 women for every 1,000 men. According to the study the sex ratio of the children up to six years of age was about 930 to 950 girls for every 1,000 boys, she informed.     

Further, according to Hemalatha the increasing dominance and acceptance of masculine traits such as aggressiveness among women in present times, is indeed a matter of concern. It is very crucial for women to preserve their feminine traits such as cooperaton and caring, and the world too has realized the importance of these traits, she therefore urged women to give serious thought to this aspect.   

President of the TMMU Sheela Shetty welcomed the gathering. Earlier the programme was inaugurated by Sugunendra Tirtha Swamiji of Puttige Math. On the occasion secretary of the Okkoota Vasanti Rao Koradkal, president of the BJP's Mahila Morcha, Shaymala Kundar, first additional civil judge (junior division) K Kathyayini, president of the women’s wing of JD(S) Gitanajali Suvarna, Congress leader Jayasri Krishnaraj and district Lioness coordinator Sapna Suresh were present.
