Mangalore, Mar 10: Two pedestrians were killed after a city bus knocked them down at main bus stand at State Bank here on Monday March 10 afternoon.  It was earlier perceived that accident occurred owing to a break failure, eyewitnesses later clarified that the bus was being driven by the cleaner at the time of accident which resulted in accident.

The accident occurred when driver of Route No 51 tried to overtake another bus of the same route at State Bank area in a bid to ply ahead. In the process, he lost control over the vehicle which in turn hit against an electricity pole before mowing down unwary pedestrians who were standing the roadside.

The deceased have been identified as Vikas (18), a resident of Bikarnakatta and Savita (22), a resident of Kotekar.  The latter is said to be a student of Mangalore University.  While she was killed on the spot, Vikas is said to have breathed his last in the hospital.

Bunder police have registered the case in this regard and investigations are on, to ascertain who was actually driving the bus, as majority of the eyewitnesses stated that it was someone else other than the driver who started the bus in order to block the other bus from plying.

The system has not changed or been overhauled even 40 years down the line. Back then I remember buses overtaking each other with no regard to law & order or consideration to precious lives. In Mangalore I have seen buses fallen into rivers, in peoples backyards & even in a few wells all because the driver wanted to overtake the bus in front to make the extra buck.

Back then it was ignorance but at this time it is corruption that makes it possible for an offender to go scot free. Wake up MANGALORE before it is too late. My sympathies to the grieving families.

Police force should get tough on reckless drivers, especially the bus drivers. The bus drivers think that they own the streets, and that they can drive the way they like. The city should put more police personnal to take control of rash driving and severely punish those who break the laws. It's time the local police force follow the footsteps of American cops.

Get the reckless drivers off the streets before they kill another innocent commuter. My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family

All these careless/irresponsible accidents shows to all the Law enforcement agencies in Mangalore are still sleeping. -Police/RTO are not doing their work properly. Here the question is not who was driving the bus.

If he has a valid driving license , he is eligible to drive the bus. M'lore police/RTO waits for the accidents to happen first, then they will take action (temporary)here the whole system is corrupt.Until and unless corruption is routed out from all the govt.departments, there is no solutions to any problems.

Deaths like these are common in parts of udupi & Mangalore and on NH17 national Highway due to the High number of private bus and in expierenced young drivers for them it doesnt matter if a car is in front of them the move them out of the way which should be stooped and licence withdrawn, very sad to see that our road transport authourities are just giving time slots to the buses even with out considering if so many buses can be accomadated on our roads.

I myself had witnessed and was in the same bus from Mangalore to Udupi and in the middle of the journey the bus went over a worker who was trying to cross the road and the bus driver just got out and disappeared in the crowd, it is now to the people to raise their voice and to bring the culprits to justice and to put a stop to these crimes.

It is high time to change the law dealing with rash driving. It needs to be amended. I am not able understand why people are getting a bail by paying few thousands of rupees?

It's high time the authorities should seriously consider formation of a new transport corporation for this fastest growing mini metro and constructing a city bus station for our enchanting Mangaluru.

This tragedy has been in news only for a day or two. Then people will forget completely about and carry on with their routine life. And most of the people of low mentality who travel in the same bus are the ones ' who encourage the drivers/conductors to go faster on roads. There it counts how much it the value for a life especially in India.

Only the concerned authorities who issues permits to these buses are responsible for this tragedy. Even me i saw how reckless & how difficult to reach the destnation within the stipulated time. Also permits to be issued with ample time should be given for the buses, coz permits have been issued to the buses like this i.e, 1st bus has to reach a particular destination with 1.30 hr time gap & the next bus which has been given only 1.05 hr to reach the same destination.

So think how reckless & how should be driver of this bus..! Horrible

This is the price the society pays for having private buses, where they are always on the look out to have more passengers, and hence the speed. I hope atleast now some rule is there so that overspeeding is not there.

Atleast this accident should open the eyes of the police department and RTO. One should see the way these buses race to compete on the narrow roads of Mangalore, but there is no body to tell them. It is said that the bus owners pay a hefty bribe to the police department and to RTO not to challan them for rash driving and in case of accidents no action to be taken and try to protect the driver and the bus.

Hope in this Governor's rule some action will be taken and buses driving rashly and stopping any where will be booked.

Terrible is the system of our laws which have been overtaken by corruption. Most of the drivers do not even know the meaning of driving. Many who handle the buses are generally illiterate and ill-mannered. What you see in general is rackless driving, over speeding, too much of horning, driving with full lights on during night, Not respecting others who use the road, harsh on passengers, always in a hurry, totally non-sense.

If all the drivers are subject to another proper driving test (non-corrupt) see how many will pass. I guess, just a few. No one else to blame but, the currupt system of ours. Peace be to all those who have lost their lives because of our corrupt system.

Day by day city traffic is increasing in an alarming rate and there should be some permanent arrangement for the city buses. Road safety seminars should be conducted for the bus drivers and they should be made aware of the public life to prevent further accidents. Also, these types of reckless driving should be controlled properly by cancelling their driving license.

These bus races are not new in the market. The buses have taken so many lives in Mangalore.still the concerned authroties are unable to open thier eyes. Hope a day when their own family falls into this kind of so called accident then it will be too late for themselves.

Atleast now we the public should take deep action to prevent further killings by these road killers

It is high time the concerned authorities put an end to this sort of tragic killing of public by unauthorised drivers. The highhandedness of some bus operators in dealing with poor passengers and rash driving to overtake preceeding vehicles should be permanently stopped.

Terrible tragedy. Whoever is responsible should spend the rest of his life in Prison  or death penalty. For years Brake failure was a convenient excuse in India to escape punishment. There is no scope for that as all vehicles have to be serviced to be in fit condition.
