Sena MP Gaikwad threatens to sue Air India, IndiGo for cancelling tickets

Mumbai, Mar 26 (Agencies) : Shiv Sena MP Ravindra Gaikwad, who was banned by seven airlines after he assaulted a 60-year-old Air India staff while boarding the flight at Delhi Airport, has threatened to sue the national carrier and IndiGo for cancelling his tickets.

"I will take legal action against IndiGo and Air India for cancelling my confirmed tickets," Gaikwad, who was supposed to fly to Pune from Delhi, said on Sunday.

The national carrier had cancelled Gaikwad’s return ticket to Pune after he boastfully asserted he would board the flight. Private airline IndiGo followed suit. With no travel option available, he was forced to take a train back from Delhi.

Gaikwad, an MP from Osmanabad, had assaulted R. Sukumar after being unable to travel business class on an all-economy flight from Pune to New Delhi. Air India officials claim they had informed the MP’s office, at the time of booking, that the plane was all-economy.

Speaking to media later that day, Gaikwad had admitted hitting Sukumar “25 times” with slipper while justified his act, saying “the staff had misbehaved with him and that he won’t take abuses from anyone”.

The Delhi Police had lodged an FIR against the lawmaker based on a complaint filed by Air India, which had also blacklisted Gaikwad. Later, IndiGo, SpiceJet GoAir, AirAsia India and Vistara also bared the MP from flying on their network.

Civil Aviation Minister Ashok Gajapathi Raju had condemned the incident, saying, “No political party will encourage physical assault. It should never have happened”.

The Shiv Sena also criticised Gaikwad for his behaviour, but Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Raut said party leaders would "raise their hand" wherever needed.

Raise their Hand whenever needed was before 2014 and definitely not after that. Now the people are well equipped and ready to raise hand whenever any atrocity takes place.

The biggest mistake commited by the authorities was he should have been arrested was for Air Rage. If one is dealt firmly other MP's will have no courage this type of mistakes. Secondly The staff have only guts to take action if it was an common man. Jai Ho India

It is a matter of great concern and shame that no action has been taken against this goonda so far. I wonder if there is any law in this country. An MP assaulting a government employee who was just discharging his duty and the Civil Aviation Minister just saying "It should never have happened." Such a worthless statement from an inept and inefficient Minister! This Minister should have been the first to take up the cudgels for the staffer as Air India is owned by the Government of India and that would have worked wonders to boost the morale of the staff members. What does this silence from the Modi government convey to the staff? It clearly shows that this government will not take any action against Gaikwad because they are with an alliance with the Shiv Sena in Maharastra. Sickening to see all this happening. Nobody is bothered about the country. All empty talk and promises are just hogwash.

The law of the land will have sanctity only when it is equally applied to all citizens, regardless of stature, educational qualifications, political affiliations, caste, religion, etc., etc.

Hope there is no delay in showing the delinquent MP his place, as also, in bringing about legislation on "right to recall' our elected representatives. There should be 'Zero tolerance' towards who take our great Indian democracy for granted.

For, in a democracy, the voter or rather, the "Aam Aadmi" is and should always be the one who calls the shots. Jai Ho!
