Mangaluru: Ghastly accident at Mulky as bus rams into parked lorry - One dead, 6 injured

Mangaluru, Mar 31: A youth died in ghastly accident between a bus and lorry at Mulky near here on Friday March 31 night.

Besides one casualty, six persons were gravely injured in the accident, it is learnt. One of the injured is a 11-year-old child.

The deceased has been identified as Elson Joy D'Souza (26), a resident of Karkala.

The impact was such that the front portion of the express bus was completely mangled. Among the people who were sitting at the front, one person died on the spot while another passed away soon after.

Though the exact cause of the accident is not yet certain, sources said that the private express bus plying from Mangaluru to Manipal crashed into the lorry which had broken down and was parked on the roadside. The bus driver failed to notice the lorry in the dark, it is said.

As soon as the accident took place, the locals rushed to the spot and helped in taking the injured to the hospital.

Following the accident, the highway was blocked for sometime.

The local police arrived at the spot and cleared the traffic.

    Request to law makers: Please constitute a well trained Highway Security Force to ensure passengers safety on roads. Equip the HSF with all modern tools and devices to prevent any such accidents. (vehicles, cranes, reflectors, barricades, communication gadgets) The HSF should be empowered to summon any help from any Govt Departments to manage crisis. Their recommendation should;d be binding on District Administration. All the buses should be fitted with speed governors. I hope the public will support such measures before it is too late.

    Very sad incident, but avoidable accident. May the soul of the departed RIP.

    As long as over speeding, rash driving and careless parking of vehicles are allowed to continue (without being strictly penalised with heavy fines & life-imprisonment), these type of incidents are bound to take place one and off. Hope the RTO & Traffic Police take strict measures, before things go out of hand.

    Such a shame on our system. These traffic police are just catching a two wheeler and passenger cars for traffic rules violation. Till to date I never saw an official catching a over speeding express bus/city bus. Thet just park on the middle of the road and dnt care about people . If they are behind they start honking like anything. Our police/RTO just see this and dnt say anything. This is one part

    second part: why do you give the permit in such a way that in-between each bus only few seconds difference is maintained. you do not provide proper bus stands for buses to park. Without providing proper facility how do you expect discipline form such a unorganized sector???? Stop catching poor people travelling on scooter and catch these rash drivers.Most important is you provide facility first and then ask all to follow

    I wish instead of banning and getting new punishments on cow slutering ,BJP govt could have got some strict rules on traffic rules. Atleast lots of life could have been saved .

    WE ARE FED UP WITH WAY TRAFFICE POLICE HANDLE THE TRAFFICE ON HIGHWAYS.
    EVERYTIME THEY KEEP ON TELLING WHAT IS WHAT INSTEAD OF PUTTING HEFTY FINE.
    THE MAIN DEVIATIONS LIKE BUSES STOP AT THEIR FANCY ON HIGHWAYS BECAUSE OF THEIR OVERCONFIDENCE ON THIER STRONG LOBBY AND TRUCKS STOP ON HIGHWAYS WITHOUT
    INDICATOR.
    THE ONLY SOLUTION TO THIS IS TRAFFIC POLICE WITHOUT UNIFORS SHOULD WATCH AT DIFFERENT PLACES PUT HEFTY FINE ON HEAVY VEHICLES WHO STOP ON HIGHWAYS.

    In fact drivers should fully concentrate on roads that too specially during night times. When carrying pasengers it is drivers duty to drive carefully and not recklessly. may be he was talking on his mobile or to a nearby person. hence lost control. The lorry that has parked there on the roadside should have indicated something i.e. red flag etc. on the back side. Through this route so many accidents taken place for which the Traffic police have to do something to prevent accidents. RIP

    The bus drivers in Udupi and Mangalore think that they own the roads. The bus drivers park their buses anywhere on the road no traffic sense and do not think of anyone else once they are behind the wheel. The State Govt. should abolish the private bus mafia and introduce only Govt. buses. The city buses in Mangalore do not issue a ticket, the bus service only there are for collection not as a service provider. The rude behaviour of the conductors and so time even a cleaners. Need of the hour is to abolish the Private Bus Mafia in Mangalore and Udupi. Very sad that two precious lives have been lost in this accident. May their souls rest in peace.

    Don, Manipal. Bus driver cannot see that a truck is parked on the road is he the only bus on the road, he must have been fast and all of a sudden rammed into the parked truck. If a person on the road waves his hand the driver will notice it even if there is no proper light. Surprising the driver did not notice the parked truck if it was parked since morning.

    You are right.. Private buses must stop plying on the roads. They are monsters behind the wheel.. Very good and clean looking govt buses are plying in Mlr and Udupi in city routs. They must ply good buses on express routs also

    Most of the accidents in India mainly due to 3 reasons:
    1. Lack of traffic rules enforcement(High Speed, Reckless drivers....etc)
    2.Aged Equipments without proper maintenance(Which means ..Driver cannot control his vehicle in case of emergency....Need tune up, maintainance.....etc)
    3. Bad roads(Most of the times)

    ABOVE simple 3 rules can save .. at least over 5 crores Lives/accidents per year in India alone...

    Very sad.Many many accidents nowadays happen mostly from these fast buses.Drive reckless,By the way when driver says he didnt see the standing lorry ,was he driving putting on lights?with so ein pacht ,so that people die on the spot,and many others injure,must have not keeping his mind on road,or on mobile?second does the standing lorrys dont put on side lights ,so that others notice?or reflectores not there.Heartfelt sympathys to the deceased familys.May the souls rest in peace.

    Very sad news to hear. Its very important for the vehicles parked in the road side to put a indicator or some sort of indication to let other drivers know that there is a vehicle parked especially in the areas where there no street lights or proper visibility. Its also good to install radar cameras to control the speed limit of vehicles. Hope government notice this to control or minimize these kind of incidents by taking proper steps to the welfare of mankind.

    These Express Bus drivers will never learn the lesson and never change their attitude. All the accidents happens in Mangaluru-Udupi Highway due to over speed only. RTO must take action on this.

Its very important to a vehicle parked on the road sides to put a indicator or some site of indication to know other drivers from a far site that there is vehicle parked especially in the dark areas where there is no street lights and also its good to implement radar cameras to control the speed limit of vehicles.     This is a negligence by the side of highway patrol after knowing the breakdown of that steel loaded lorry they had their duty to keep some sign or alert lights to avoid this kind of accident, blaming somebody after the incident is meaningless !! But it should not be continued by patrol people they collect toll they should be having the responsibility for this kind of issues... let their soul be in peace!!

    Not following the basic Road Rules - Wrong Parking on the Road, Speeding, talking on mobile phone while driving, driving on wrong side are some of the main reasons for these type of deadly accidents. Traffic Police have to take stern acton on the offenders to reduce these type deadly accidents.

    Safety is not at all important for the so called educated city. Regulations are not at all strict. When a. Vehicle breaks down indicator or signage to be placed to avoid such accident... Very sad...

    Very sad news!
    Even after very widened roads between Mangaluru and Udupi, normal drivers gets distracted by OPPOSITE SIDE & WRONG SIDE DRIVING by 2 wheelers and 4 wheelers. Police must keep a watch and penalize them.
    Also, penalize 2 wheelers for not retaining the REAR VIEW MIRRORS!

    Street lights are not put at all places on highways. Instead reflectors are used. But as for this accident location, THERE ARE STREET LIGHTS as it falls within Mulki town. Check the images carefully... there are sufficiently bright street lights.

    Buses fly now like formula one race with no sense of speed, High time the traffic police put speed limits for highways. I feel very sad when I see an accidnet because they are preventable deaths, May there be more speed governors on highways. I am feeling sad mad and bad, Hope the highway drivers drive slowly now.
