Carrying cooked, home-made food to Dubai banned

Daijiworld Media Network - Dubai

Dubai, Apr 11: Many a time, people travelling from India to the UAE carry with them medicines and cooked or home-made foods, assuming that these are simple packages that would cause no harm to anyone. Time and again, we have seen cases were passengers, unaware of what medicines to carry while crossing the Indian shores, land up in trouble if the medicines happen to be banned in the destination country, or if they are unaccompanied by valid prescriptions.

Not only medicines and narcotics, passengers travelling to the UAE are even prohibited from carrying home-made cooked food.

In a recent directive, the Consul General of India in Dubai published detailed guidelines on banned items on its website, citing Dubai Customs as source.

They are:

1. All kinds of narcotic drugs (hashish, cocaine, heroin, poppy seeds, hallucinogenic pills, etc.).

2. Goods intended to be imported from boycotted countries.

3. Goods of Israeli origin or bearing Israeli trademarks or logos

4. Crude ivory and rhinoceros horn.

5. Gambling tools and machinery.

6. Three layered fishing nets.

7. Original engravings, prints, lithographs, sculptures and statues in any material.

8. Used, reconditioned and inlaid tires.

9. Radiation polluted substances.

10. Printed publications, oil paintings, photographs, pictures, cards, books, magazines, stone sculptures and mannequins which contradict Islamic teachings, decency, or deliberately imply immorality or turmoil.

11. Any other goods, the importation of which is prohibited under the authority of UAE customs laws or any other laws in the country.

12. Forged and duplicate currency.

13. Cooked and home-made foods.

Guidelines for bringing medicines and drugs into Dubai:

1. As certain chemicals and drugs are banned in the UAE, it is essential to check and ensure that the medicines which someone is carrying does not contain a banned or restricted substance. The list of drugs and medicines banned in the UAE is available on this website.

2. If for medical or emergency reasons, one needs to carry any medicines, one should have a medical prescription from a UAE-licenced doctor. If treatment was undertaken outside the UAE, one must carry both a doctor's prescription as well as a detailed medical report, both of which should be suitably attested.

3 Residents and non-resident patients can bring into the UAE at most a three-month supply of prescription medicine, for their personal use.

4. Psychotropic medicines can be brought by non-residents to cover their personal consumption for a maximum of three months.

5. Psychotropic medicines can be brought in by residents in a quantity sufficient for one month's consumption. However, residents can bring at most a three-month supply if the medicine is not available in the UAE provided that they obtain prior approval from the Drug Control Department.

6. Resident and non-resident patients should not bring narcotic medicines into the country without the prior approval of the Ministry of Health. Each case will be studied and approved. A valid prescription and medical report from the concerned hospital or department will be required.

7. Medicines that arrive in the country via postal courier cannot be released to the patient unless the above requirements are fulfilled.

8. For more information related to restrictions on carrying of medicines, drugs and chemicals into the UAE, one must check the Dubai Customs website or www.dubai.ae beforehand.

9. Be careful of carrying in poppy seeds which are banned, so avoid accidentally carrying bakery products that might contain such seeds. Also banned are qat leaf, betel leaf or nuts, niswar, gutkha. These while admissible in some countries are not permitted in the UAE.

Thank you, Sri Rathan. Think what BJP government did Karnataka, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Maharastra and other places. They started to ban beef and attacked many poor innocents. Attacked Churches, Mosques, and even the Hindus who were friendly with other religions.
For you helpful information I donated Rs. Ten Thousand at the election time and helped some BJP candidates as they promised they are doing the better job, in living and employment. But nothing gave fruit. I am not supporting any political parties because I believe in hard work and peace. Now coming to point why I said this issue is stated by BJP because they started banning beef, attacking other religious places, and all stupid things. So every country wants to show their identity, and that is what happening now. It is so sad if someone wants to take either Ganapathi Statue or wooden cross to gulf they can not. The cause for all this is BJP. Hope you got my point. Thank you, Sir.

Your question is valuable and it definitely pertains to for anyone those who are on ayurveda and homeopathy treatment.

As per the guidelines, it clearly says that:

"If for medical or emergency reasons, one needs to carry any medicines, one should have a medical prescription from a UAE-licenced doctor. If treatment was undertaken outside the UAE, one must carry both a doctor's prescription as well as a detailed medical report, both of which should be suitably attested".

Yet, I would suggest, not to take undue risk. UAE customs may be lenient at times, but when your bad times comes nothing works fine. It is not India, when someone is caught, authorities allow to see their family members. In UAE, when someone is caught, they are not allowed to see or visit. Again, they have to be in the prison for months until their case comes for investigation in the court.

One more thing please note, Never ever take food products and medicines from neighbours, relatives, however close they may be. If you still cant say, then at least open and see the content. For you, your family should be the priority, rest later.

Even if you have medicines prescribed by the Indian Doctor, and possessing original prescription & invoice, yet i caution you, some medicines widely available in India may be banned in Gulf Countries.

There was an incident where my co-worker was stripped off, when he took nearly 1000 tablets for diabetic patient, which was given by his neighbour along with Kashmiri chillies to deliver in UAE. He was lucky on that day, but not always.

If anyone has so much desire for home made food, he can visit his home on Thursday night and return next day as tickets are cheaper during off-peak days and there are many International are having direct flights to UAE.
