Mangaluru: BJP politicising water issue, misguiding people - Mayor hits back

Daijiworld Media Network- Mangaluru (ANK)

Mangaluru Apr 12: Hours after the district unit of BJP criticised the MCC over water shortage in the city and alleged that it was 'artificially created' to 'help the water mafia', mayor Kavita Sanil lashed out at the opposition party for politicising the issue.

Addressing a press meet here on Wednesday April 12, Kavita Sanil said, "They should not politicise the water issue. We have taken concrete measures to increase the water level up to 5 metres in the Thumbay dam as discussed in the meeting.

"Less than 100 people had gathered for the (BJP) protest. Mangaluru has a population of nearly 6 lac. In case if there is scarcity of water whole people of Mangaluru should have gathered instead of just 100 people. The protestors know the reality and actual level of the water at Thumbay. They are trying to misguide people. I am confident that people will not believe such allegations," she said.

"Last year we had faced acute shortage of water and supplied water with the help of water tankers. We have spent up to Rs 143 lac on digging 43 borewells and cleaning 53 open wells to provide drinking water. At present, the water level at Thumbay dam is 4.5 meters. We will supply water four days a week till April end.

"From May first week, we will supply water on a daily basis to the people in Mangaluru by increasing the water level of Thumbay dam up to 5 meters from AMR dam," she added.

Moving on to other issues, Kavita Sanil said, "In certain places, shopkeepers have occupied parking lots illegally. This creates difficulties for parking space. Within ten days, if they do not take action to clear the parking space, we will do the needful. Shopkeepers have no right to occupy parking spaces illegally."

Deputy mayor Rajaneesh, MCC chief whip Shashidhar Hegde and others were present.

Why digging of Bore wells cost more for government? Common man is spending maximum One Lac for one Bore well and the same for government money it costs more than double.

BJP definitely politicising water issue when they know that not only in Mangalore in all places people are experiencing water shortage problems. mangalore is no exception. If they were in power what they would have done. They cant do any miracles. With all the efforts done by the MCC Mangalore expecting 3 MGD water from Lakya dam as per Supreme courts interim order. So there solves the water problem.
However in addition to this Mayor, D.C have to see that no water is used by the riverside estate/ garden owners of arecanut, coconut etc. growers as plenty of water is diverted for such uses thereby making the water flow to thumbe dam is reduced. this should be checked.

BORE WELL IN REVERSE CAN BE A SOLUTION.
Rain water harvesting in areas where the ground water is less or zero in summer can be replenished with rain water(clean) going directly to bore wells to replenish the water table.
I know many will not agree with me. But in another 10 years it will be necessary.
Our colleges and education does not allow us to think innovative ideas . We are forever blaming others!

Why four days a week in April.?You should provide 365 days before blaming opposition. Ultimately, people have to suffer. Is it a way of making money through water tankers.?

Borewells is not a long term solution, it is a temporary solution with an adverse long term impact as it reduces the ground water level. PLEASE look at long term solutions like building more water storage facilities/dams, mandatory rain water harvesting for all new constructions, preventing leakages in supply pipes etc. Working together irrespective of the political affiliations is what is needed.

If BJP party supporters feel that there is sufficient water in Thumbay Dam then why cant you all go and prove it in the Court of Law .Also , it would be good if you ask Sadananda Gowda about his proposed Yettinahole project and also the BJP party which proposed this project.
