Mangalore, Mar 19: The city is fast growing into a haven for crime and criminals. Otherwise what explanation could be given to the ever increasing rate of crime which is threatening to harm the tranquility of this educational hub? It is not even a fortnight that an innocent rickshaw driver was murdered for no fault of his.  His murder was to avenge the earlier murder of another rickshaw driver in Bantwal.

Now there is one more murder, albeit it might not have anything to do with communal element.  The city woke up to the news that Simon D'Souza, a senior citizen was beaten to death at Faisalnagar on Wednesday March 19 morning.

Simon D'Souza (60), who owned betel leaves business in the city's central market, had left his house around 4 am as usual for work. But he was later found murdered near his house. He was killed by unidentified men with the help of a wooden club, which was found on the spot. Simon was hit on his head with the wooden club which resulted in his death, said Kankanady police who arrived on the spot as soon as the news was passed on to them.

Sources said that Simon was a convert. Earlier he was a 'Belchada' (a Malayali Billawa). Along with his betel leaves business, locals said that he was also a money-lender. Though nothing more is known about his murder and murderers, police said that some problem in money-lending business might have resulted in the murder.

The Kankanady police led by circle inspector Jayanth Shetty are investigating the case.

I guess this is symptomatic of the disease that has afflicted society, particularly in the district. Looks like people just need an excuse to kill or hurt, even for the flimsiest of reasons. There was a time when even major disputes were settled amicably. It's time we introspect on what has gone horribly wrong in the last decade or so, lest we make the make the place unliveable for future generations.

I feel sorry for the murder of another Christian. Is there an end to the violence that is committed against the Christians? Can't we rise and let the others know that it has to stop?
