Mangaluru: 'Will listen only to CM' - U T Khader refuses to obey ban on red beacon

Mangaluru, May 2 (PTI): Karnataka minister U T Khader has refused to fall in line with the central government's ban on red beacons in VIP vehicles, saying he would remove it if Chief Minister Siddaramaiah instructs him to do so.

"If the Chief Minister asks me to remove the red beacon light, I will obey his instruction and remove it," Food and Civil Supplies Minister U T Khader said.

Khader said it was the state government that had given him the car with a red beacon light, not central government, and he had no right to alter it.

"I do not have power to alter my car. It is left to the cabinet to decide," he told reporters here yesterday.

Khader also said he would not object to the ban on red beacon light on VIP vehicles but most importantly, the government should bring in schemes which will fill stomachs of people and provide education.

"Let the central government bring into force such a notification, I am not saying no, but most importantly it should introduce schemes wherein it is possible to fill the stomachs of people and provide education," the Congress minister said.

The aim of the government should bring people to the level of VIP, he added.

He also said, "I am not moving around with the red beacon light placed on my head. It is installed on my car."

The Union Cabinet had last month decided to end the flashing of red beacons with effect from yesterday to end the VIP culture.

Mr Khader is a politician who move with people freely without using the so called VIP Culture . I hardly seen with convoy vehicles and police escorts wherever he travels . It is a good culture . Removing Red beacon doesn't make him any different. I appreciate the move of PM minister in instructing removal of red Beacon from VIPs vehicle. I will appreciate the move completely only when central Government removes all the etc security provided to PM President Chief ministers Governs and all other VIP. The PM and CMs must able to travel in ordinary train without using helicopters then they can understand the common peoples woes. The Government money is wasted for the security of the so called VIPs instead it should be utilized for the security of the common people who are being vulnerable to all sorts of threat . I think the expenses of running The official residence of PM CM etc may run crores together. Further the govt must strengthen police force and release the police officers from VIPs security and should be available for common man s security

THIS SHOWS HIS NARROW MINDEDNESS. AS A MATURED PERSON HE SHOULD BE ABLE TO UNDERSTAND THE GRAVITY OF THE SUBJECT IN THE INTEREST OF THE NATION. THIS IS APPLICABLE TO EVEN BJP RULED STATES ALSO. CM MAY BE HEAD OF THE STATE BUT HIGH COMMAND NOMINATED BUT NOT VOTED BY PEOPLE LIKE MODI WHO HAS BEEN PROJECTED BEFORE ELECTIONS AS PM CANDIDATE AND VOTED TO HEAD THE COUNTRY WITH TWO THIRD MAJORITY.

From what I have heard, Mr.Khader is a good human being... However on this occasion I think he should acknowledge the good motive behind PM's notification and remove the red beacon and show that for the development of the country politicians need to rise beyond political mud slinging...

in such a case why the common people of this country should follow RTO rules? Khader's statement not acceptable. you might be in congress but as citizen of the country & as a representative of the people & as a minister you should follow the law of the land. there is no PM or CM's instruction is required for that. this country is not belongs to congress or bjp or any other political party. it belongs to the people of this country.

I am in confusion, after reading Khadar's statement. I am living in village & which law/rules should I follow? Central govt or State Govt or my village Panchayat rules. in view, as khader's logic I should follow Grama Panchayat law.

every citizen of this country should follow the law of this country. don't divide the country by statewise. we have already having the experience in J&K. central govt law is applicable for all it is not statewise. as a minister you should be role model for the general public. don't disobey the law of this country it may send wrong message to the society & tomorrow public may not accept the rules & regulations.

khadar should understand that he is the minister of Karnataka & Karnataka is in India. Finally the country law should be followed by every citizen. you may please recall that the CM of Punjab state Mr.Amarindar has removed the red light from his car before the central govt announcement & he belongs to congress party only. was that done for publicity? why he has removed the red beacon? was that helped any poor people? khaddar has to ask this question to congress leaders.

The arrogance of our politicians has no bounds.

''The aim of the government should bring people to the level of VIP''

Got to be one of the dumbest comment I have ever heard. So Mr. Kader, why don't you put forth a proposal to our state govt to allow every common man to put red beacon?

Though, I am a Congress man, I welcome and fully support this good move and ban by the Central Government, effective from May 1st 2017, which does not exempt even vehicles of our country’s top dignitaries such as the President, Prime Minister and the Chief Justice of India.

One has to see the good intention and purpose behind this move. One should not see the political party and fully encourage and support such progressive achievements.

The ban will also applicable to Union ministers, Chief Ministers, State Cabinet Ministers, Bureaucrats and Judges of the High Court and Supreme Court. The main aim of this ban of red beacons atop cars of all ministers, politicians and bureaucrats, ending a privilege that was seen as the ultimate status symbol.

Khadar, you have been different kind of politician all through. You should have opted to let go of the red beacon instead of trying to please Sidramayya. You have a good reputation beyond party lines, please maintain it.

Mr. Khadar is a good politician, down to earth, has helped so many common people involved in accidents etc. He has been shunning the VIP culture even when red lights were permitted on the cars. Also, just by removing red lights the culture will not end, convoys wont end, barricades wont end. There will be other ways of showing off - all government vehicles are marked in G series..for KA-19-G-1234. Now power can be shown off by have single digit numbers like 1, 7, 7777 etc.
