Bangalore, Apr 14: Four foetuses, wrapped in plastic covers were found near the railway track in Jalahalli on Sunday.

The needle of suspicion points to laboratories in the area which could have disposed them of after using them for medical study and research by the students.

The Jalahalli police were informed about the cover containing the foetuses by a passerby. It was taken to M S Ramaiah hospital for examination. "We found that some of them were even premature babies.

However, it seems the laboratory staff must have thrown them near the railway track," police said. The Jalahalli police have registered a complaint by the person who had informed them. They have taken up a case under section 318 of the IPC and are investigating.

A few months ago, foetus were found in Srirampuram police limits. The Women's commission had taken serious note of laboratories disposing of such foetus and premature babies. The laboratories have not been using prescribed ways of disposing of medical waste. "After using such biological parts, the laboratories should cremate the bodies. However, not all institutions are using such ways," the police officials added.

The biomedical waste rules clearly states procedures to follow while disposing of any medical waste. It says biomedical waste shall be treated and disposed of in accordance with the law, and in compliance with the standards prescribed.

It also states biomedical waste shall not be mixed with other wastes, and shall be segregated into containers or bags at the point of generation in accordance with standards prior to its storage, transportation, treatment and disposal.

The containers shall be labelled according to the standards and no untreated biomedical waste shall be kept stored beyond a period of 48 hours.
