Moodbidri: Theft of cows goes unabated - dairy farmers feeling let down

Daijiworld Media Network - Moodbidri (SP)

Moodbidri, Jun 17: Theft of cows has become a regular affair in the city and surrounding villages since long. Dairy farmers, who raise loans and buy cows with the hope of generating some income for the family, are overwhelmed by a sense of insecurity now as the thieves of cows go undetected and unpunished, and the thefts are continuing to happen regularly. The dairy farmers have been lamenting about the inability of the legal system to come to their aid and provide them justice.

A local breed cow that had been tethered to enable lit to graze in Golya area near Swarajya Maidan in the city was stolen at around 2 pm on June 14. Another cow of jersey breed that also had been grazing along with the previous one, came running back to its cattle shed. Apparently a strong rope was tied around its neck and an attempt to drag it away was made but it had succeeded in escaping and running home to safety. Asha, to whom the two cows belonged, grew suspicious on seeing the jersey cow coming back home, and rushed to the spot where the other cow was tethered to find that it had been taken away by thieves.

Asha and her husband, Dinesh Nayak, told the media persons that they had been raising the cows by taking loans. They explained said that they expected to get some income by selling milk generated from the cows to the dairy. "We depend on on the income generated out of dairying for family maintenance, payment of school fee and other expenses of children and other domestic expenses. We have now been spending sleepless nights since sometime as we are afraid of our cows being stolen from the cattle shed at night," they lamented.

About a week back, a milching cow which belonged to Ramesh Nayak had been stolen from Ontikatte by the side of Ring Road near Swarajya Maidan. On June 14, a gang which arrived at Gandhinagar here in an Omni car had taken away a cow owned by Janaki. A few days back, a cow belonging to Shobha from Gandhinagar here had been stolen from the spot where it was tethered. In all these cases, owners of the animals have filed complaints in police station.

The owners of lost cow expect the investigating officers to solve the theft cases early and do justice to them. Will it happen or not is a question that is to be answered by the police department.

    @ Ramesh --Mangalore
you wanted to know the meaning of Beef.... if you google you will get this answer ...
Beef is the flesh of a cow, bull or ox used as food .....
if you check with Arnab, he has enough proof to say that 62 % of the beef export comes from cow meet... He even challenged the Modi govt to stop this ...
this 62 % proves, that cows are NOT at all used in India and All cows are killed for export ...

    @ Rita Germany ....
good suggestion.....where there is a will , there is a way .... The farmers are aware of such tricks to catch hold of the thieves ... But the truth is, theft is not taking place from cow sheds, but they are stolen from streets and grazing grounds... I know many BD goons who supply / sell cattles to others .... Stealing from cow sheds is not at all possible... the thieves will have to bring a vehicle or they have to take the cattle by walk... if 10 -20 villagers gather together, is it possible for the thieves to complete the work ??? I have heard the farmers saying of disappearances of cattle, from grazing grounds ... Stealing from cow sheds is nothing but a ajji khate .... our country is full of goondas and they can do anything on streets and grazing grounds ....

Cow theft will go on indeed and it is not entirely cow thieves fault it is the lack in transparency in govt policy. BJP says it never interferes in anyone's food choices but at the same time they have their own cow vigilante goons to see nobody is involved in beef trade. How is this possible if beef eaters don't slaughter cow legally and sell how food choice is independent?. Govt must be clear in its policy and provide proper infrastructure for cattle rearing for sale and meat and not saying something and from behind doing entirely different.

some people thought that the cow is belongs to bjp party. hence they keep quiet when the cow theft happen on daily. instead they indirectly supporting these thieves. I don't think any law or religion will support this kind of crimes. but still people argue that they have the freedom of food to eat & their religious feelings should not be hurt. what a tragedy. our CM asking central govt to waive off the farmers loan. but he is not even taken any step to save our farmers. he is quiet now even though our poor famers are loosing their cows due to this kind of criminal gang.

If a fair investigation is done then you will find Hindutva members behind stealing of cows. Through their vigilantism they have forced out other people from the cow trade. Now the turf belongs to them and they make a good money by taking hafta for secure transportation of cows to the abattoirs. Smart business model.

So sad, Some people make their livelihood by farming and hardworking some make their lively hood by stealing others livelihood. Ruthless people do not deserve any mercy in this world.

Once they are caught, parade them for a whole month from Manglore to Udupi . All cow stealing is interlinked by the gang and they exactly know by name who stole it and where it has been sold. Do not leave them until they pay money for all the cows lost since 5 to 10 years. Please do not mix beef eating and stealing here.

    Dear Santhosh Udupi,

The sin is defined in the English dictionary as :

An immoral act considered to be a transgression against divine law.

Give me one verse from the vedas Cow is God.

You should be crystal clear in your perception that an animal and a reptile is not considered as God.

God is supreme Power. Do the Cow has supreme Power.

So the whole world of humans doesn't considers cow is God.

Remain the question of protection and killing a cow or a cattle is not at all a Sin.

People in South Canara did not have any problems until recently about Muslims or others eating beef. It has become an issue of concern when Muslims here started preferring the meat from stolen cattle though it is haraam, just because they get it cheap. This encouraged the unemployed Muslim youth indulge in cow stealing vigorously. Compensation given to kabir's family has given further encouragement.
Government should open up more legal slaughterhouses in South canara and urge Muslims not to entertain meat from stolen cows (illegal purchases). Automatically communal tensions in South Canara will see an end.

That's why illegal slaugher houses closing and streamlining slaughter houses. There is no control on these slaughter houses. Constitutionally it's punishable to sell cow meat. If any one complaint about a export company with proof, sure they will be in trouble. If you are quoting about sadvi, s remarks, she is same like a fatwa mullah who keep on issuing fatwas for everything.

I am a non vegeatarian I don't like bans. But if you argue with some one who speak about religious sentiment with cows then what about pork. Isn't not eating pork is religious issue. Isn't there is unannounced ban in states countries pork purely on religious basis.

@Santhosh Udipi, killing a animal is not a sin but stealing is one.Thats forbidden.when today people kill more people than a cow which is a big sin.Over this thema none says it is a sin,but only over a cow.Animals are meant for meals either to another or people .Since Indians are honouring a cow doesnt mean it shouldnt be eaten.Apart from eating, most probably cows are stolen first to meat purpose, second many people sell it and earn money in black.Best is who have cattle at home shouldnt leave the cows to graze without any one having around.too many are stolen.Nights bolts should be applied from inside ,and have a dog to give alarm.tie a bell around at night on their neck so you hear it.Govt should give some compansation to people wwhere cows are stolen.so they can atleast have some money to pay back their loan.

All the State Governments of India should increase cattle population considerably by providing subsidies to cattle keepers.

All the State Governments of India should issue permits to cattle slaughter houses to each and every Taluks so as to bring down meat prices in the market drastically.

PRESENTLY MEAT PRICES ARE HIGHEST IN THE MARKET INCLUDING CHICKEN.
CHICKEN PRICES HAVE BEEN INCREASED DUE TO NON-AVAILABILITY OF CATTLE MEAT.

Presently due to illegal and un-appointed vigilantes cattle for slaughter houses is not available and the cattle population is also less. As a result the cattle is not available to slaughter houses.

SLAUGHTERING A CATTLE FOR FOOD PURPOSES IS NOT A SIN. ROBING IS A SIN. ANIMALS ARE NOT GODS.

I AM AGAINST ANY KIND OF ROBBING CATTLE FROM INNOCENT CATTLE KEEPERS OR FROM INNOCENT FARMERS HOUSES MAY BE THE ROBBERS BELONGING TO HINDU COMMUNITY, CHRISTIAN COMMUNITY OR MUSLIM COMMUNITY.

COW May not be God for you. But for Hindus it is as sacred as God, infact it is God, and nothing wrong in calling Cow as God. I am not supporting the violence in the name of eating beef. In India everybody is free to follow their faith and practice their religion. Central Govt has not banned selling and eating beef. It has only put a restriction on selling of Cow in live market which is upheld by the Kerala high court. Anti social activities including cow theft should be dealt seriously and should punish those who are involving in these kind of activities.

Sir, point taken. But, you are mixing up issues here. Here the issue discussed is about cruelty to animals and theft by anti-social elements and the inaction by police. Let people eat or kill whatever they want, but don't animals have the right to have a peaceful death. Do they deserve to be tied, dragged, maimed before being killed? Don't all the religions propagate this? What right do these anti -social elements have to steal someone's property. Today they are stealing cows, what is the guarantee that they will not kidnap our kids tomorrow for money. If we keep quiet now, that day is not far Sir.
