Foodies in for a treat: Sharjah's famous Woodlands Restaurant reopens

Report: Shodhan Prasad

Sharjah, Jun 18: In a happy news for those who enjoy good food, especially the delectable Mangalurean cuisine, the famous Woodlands Pure Vegetarian Restaurant reopened near Choithram’s Supermarket on King Faisal Street in Sharjah.

Mangalureans Devesh Alva, Raghavendra Nayak and Sairam Shetty have once again joined hands in running this venture which has become a favourite with most of the vegetarians living in Sharjah and around. For the past many years they have been serving people in and around Sharjah in another location at Rolla Street. Another branch of Woody’s Restaurant is already doing good business in Saif Zone, Sharjah.

The restaurant was reopened in a simple ceremony at the new location on Friday June 7 at 6 pm with puja and 'homa' conducted by Purohit Raghu Bhat and witnessed by a few close associates of the owners.

Devesh Alva, Reshma Alva, Raghavendra Nayak and Shilpa Nayak did the honours and received blessings.

Refreshments were served for the guests as a part of the puja formalities.

From June 18 to 21, the restaurant is open from 7.30 pm onwards for complimentary tasting and sampling for Kannadigas especially in groups. The restaurant will be open for business from June 22 onwards. Ramadan timings will be followed until Eid.

A few of the specialties served at Woodlands on Fridays are Mangalurean buns, Goli Baje, Mude, Kottige etc. Catering for puja occasions is also one of the restaurant's specialties. Woodlands also offers a variety of other Indian and Chinese dishes. Chaat at Woodlands is famous and the chaat counter is manned by a specialist chef, handpicked from the famous Elco market of Mumbai. In addition to this, special South Indian meals served on banana leaves will be available on weekends.

At this new branch, the Woodlands management has introduced a unique concept called 'Your choice, your budget', during lunch hours on week days. A variety of lunch items will be displayed with the price tags and the customers pay for only what they pick from the display.

Veg kheema rice which is a unique specialty served only at Woodlands Sharjah in UAE is another hallmark.

A few of the items on Woodlands menu are breakfast items like upma, pineapple kiseribath, idli, variety of dosas, vada, puri, uttappa, mini tiffin, etc, chaats like pau bhaji, sev puri, bhelpuri, vada pau, dahipuri, panipuri, etc, North Indian sabjis like veg makhanwala, veg dilruba, bhindi masala, kaju masala, paneer palak, mushroom masala, baigunbharta, etc, rice specialties like pulaos and biryanis, veg kheema rice, jeera rice, tomato rice etc, deserts like gajarhalwa, gulabjamun, faloodas, fruit salas and fruit malbas.

It is mouth watering news that Sharjah's famous Woodlands Restaurant has reopened. We especially South Indians missed the delicious snacks and food served there. During my next visit to Sharjah which is very soon, I will have the meals served on banana leaves which I have not had since a long long time. Good luck to all the owners and employees of Woodland Restaurant.
